Episode 9
Episode 9 of Jack & Joker begins with Jack and Joke packing up the hospital room as Grandma is discharged. Joke jokes about taking the expensive furnishing and the boys bicker. The moment’s broken as Joke wonders how much longer Jack has to work for Rose.
The rest of the gang throws a surprise welcome for Grandma. It is also Jack’s birthday which surprises the boys and start planning a party. However, Joke looks sad as Rose calls Jack over for the day. They promise to blow the birthday candles together that night.
Rose knows it is Jack’s birthday and wants to celebrate with him. She asks for Nang’s help who subtly hints that she should propose to Jack in front of the Four Horsemen.
After Rose leaves, Nang asks Hoi about Joke. He goes on about how great Joke is and Nang realises he can take care of everything. She then gives Hoi four Tarot cards for each of them and insists he should distribute them when they are together. ‘The Fool’ is Joke’s, ‘The World’ is Tattoo’s, ‘The Moon’ is Aran’s and ‘The Star’ is Hoi’s.
Elsewhere, Aran and Tattoo plan for the party. Tattoo is upset that his inventions are not selling which is making it difficult to pay off his mom’s debt. Aran encourages him and wishes he was like Tattoo so he could do something for himself. He misses his dad and starts crying. Tattoo awkwardly tries to comfort him.
At Rose’s, Jack tries to leave early but she starts crying and he agrees to stay for dinner. Disappointed, he texts Joke that he will be late. It is the same for Joke as well and we see him spying on them from a rooftop nearby.
A flashback to 5 hours earlier shows the gang eating together. Joke misses Jack and visits Boss in hopes of gaining Jack’s freedom.
At present, a guard catches Joke but Hoi, Aran and Tattoo come to his rescue and knock out the guard. Hoi brings out the tarot cards but there is nothing special. Joke tries to send them back but the boys insist on helping.
Operation Bring Babes Back begins – steal the Horsemen ring from the Eagle Room in exchange for Jack’s freedom. Tattoo hides a camera and enters Rose’s home as the delivery boy. Aran navigates him from the roof while Hoi is the getaway driver. As for Joke, he is in the icebox Tattoo is delivering.
Two guards catch Tattoo and escort him out but this allows Joke to escape. He knocks out a waiter and steals his uniform. Unfortunately for him, the head waiter spots him and sends him to serve champagne. He doesn’t know how to open the champagne bottle and spills on the guests. Nang is one of them and while she simply heads upstairs to change, the second guest forces Joke to wipe her feet. Jack is furious but Rose stops him.
While everyone is distracted, Joke makes his way to the Eagle Room. Hoi cuts the light and the CCTV just in time and the security thinks it is part of the party. Rose’s dad sends someone to check while Rose takes Jack to the Eagle Room. Joke hides in the closet while Rose reveals the power the ring gives the wearer. It will belong to her husband and she asks Jack to be her boyfriend.
Jack thanks her but apologises for leading her on. He has someone he likes but assures her they can be friends. She tears up but agrees and they head out. Hoi wonders who Jack’s crush is while Joke is lost in thought.
Onto the heist, the ring is guarded by laser beams. There are different symbols but Hoi has cracked the code. One of the symbols is a star, the same symbol behind the tarot cards. He is right and Joke disables the laser and steals the ring.
However, the guards find the knocked-out waiter and Rose’s dad shuts down the house. Joke is caught and chased to Rose’s room. He finds Nang changing and she covers for him, stopping the guards from looking into the room. But the guards run off as it seems they have spotted Aran. They head to the rooftop and only find the knocked-out guard.
Joke realises Nang is helping them and wonders why. But she simply calls Hoi and the boys escape. As Jack leaves, he calls and apologises to Boss, promising to do anything else. Boss simply tells him to live his life and lets him quit.
Back home, Jack and Joke drink. Joke brings him a dumpling with a candle on it and asks him to make a wish. Jack’s wish has come true as he has finally escaped Boss. He tells Joke to make a wish but so has his wish come true – Jack’s freedom. They simply blow the candle out together.
Jack tells Joke about Rose’s proposal and decides to play ‘Truth and Dare’. Jack picks ‘Truth’ and Joke asks him about the person he likes. Jack says it is Joke and asks him to be his boyfriend as a dare. Joke agrees and they kiss.
At the end of Jack & Joker Episode 9, we get a flashback to Boss’ call. After he hangs up, Joke arrives with the ring. He warns him not to go back on his promise to leave Jack alone and Boss claims he is a man of his word. Boss is impressed and asks him to work with him but Joke refuses and leaves. Boss wears the ring and gives a clean-up job to an old acquaintance.
The Episode Review
Jack & Joker Episode 9 finally gives us the boys in their dating era. After 9 whole episodes, we finally made it! After the previous episode, it should have been obvious to Jack that Joke likes him as he knows how hard it must have been for him to help Grandma. As for Joke, it seems like he was aware of their feelings for each other for a long time as he didn’t look surprised by Jack’s confession to Rose and to him.
Onto this week’s plot, Nang is becoming more obvious with her schemes. We finally have an idea of what her endgame just might be. She may be sincere with Hoi but she is clearly playing Rose and Boss. While we thought Boss and the Horsemen were the big bad baddies, Nang is out here controlling everyone like her puppets. Boss may be wearing the ring but she is the one with the power.
