Episode 10
Episode 10 of Jack & Joker begins with Jack and Joke hooking up. Later, Jack wonders about marriage but Joke never thought about it since he would be a bad father. Jack assures him otherwise. He then notices ‘The Fool’ tarot card in Joke’s pocket and Joke claims Hoi left it behind. It reminds him of his deal with Boss and he tears it up.
Jae-oh’s business is doing well but Boss’ men suddenly drag her away. Jack and Joke are out on a date and they notice. Jack can’t help which irks him. Joke tries to lighten the mood by being cheesy.
He has also made fliers for Jack’s school and they pass it around. The kids want Jack to prove his Taekwondo skills and the boys put on a show. The whole time Joke sends Jack heart eyes and they are all lovey-dovey. However, Jack cannot stop thinking of the tarot card as he wonders what it’s about.
Elsewhere, Boss orders his men to round up every debtor that still owes him. We find out why as a troubled Save confides in Hope that he has been forced to draft a new debt contract template. Those who cannot pay on time will be forced to work for Boss like slaves. Both Save and Hope owe Boss and they can’t run away as the ring has made him powerful.
That night, Toi Ting comes crying and reveals that her father has abandoned her. Joke promises to take care of her and Jack invites her to live with them. Joke cheers her up by asking her to draw a banner for the school and Jack looks at them lovingly. It cuts to her helping the boys hang the banner and it is chaos. As for Aran, he has made trainee teacher badges for him and Tattoo. Hoi wants one too and sulks till Aran gives him his badge.
The school’s opening ceremony begins and Rose hijacks it with dancers and balloons. The kids are unamused and leave for class with Jack and Joke. Hoi claps for her but Aran stops him and the trio leaves too.
In class, Jack gives the kids a maths problem and runs off. Joke is lost as the kids ask for his help. Surprisingly, his dad comes to his rescue. A flashback shows Jack inviting Dr. Suthi to the school’s opening. He reveals that Joke misses home but he is scared of Suthi. Jack wants him to witness Joke’s growth and shares it’s never too late to reconcile.
At present, Jack shows up to take the kids to the next class. Alone, Suthi apologises to Joke for everything and asks him to come home for dinner. Toi Ting interrupts and Jack tries to take her away but Joke stops them. He introduces Toi Ting as his adoptive child, and Jack as his boyfriend. Suthi is happy that he can see this side of Joke and the boy thanks him for coming.
Elsewhere, Boss and Nang drink and we learn that they are siblings. Rose’s parents killed theirs and they want revenge. However, Nang is having second thoughts as she points out that he is targeting the wrong people. Boss warns her not to go against him.
Things start going wrong during Tattoo’s class. Protestors trash Rose’s office while Boss’ men plan to drag away the debtors hiding in Nang’s shrine. Rose and Jack decide to head to her office while Joke, Tattoo, Aran and Hoi are set to go to the shrine. Toi Ting wants to tag along and seems upset when Joke refuses and acts like it is the last time he may see her.
Jack too notices that Joke is acting off as the latter wonders how many times one can be forgiven for the same mistake. But Jack trusts him, and Joke looks sad as he says he loves him. As the Four Little Pigs drive to the shrine, they argue whether to tell Jack about the ring. Aran, Tattoo and Hoi want to keep it a secret but Joke doesn’t want to lie anymore.
At the office, Save and Hope are trying to calm down the protestors as someone has stolen the funds for the debt project. Rose promises to pay them all personally and sends them away. Jack believes Boss is the culprit as he will lose his lending business if Rose’s debt project succeeds. Save wonders if Joke stole the ring for Boss to make him so powerful but Jack vouches for him.
At that moment, Jae-oh, falls to her death. Shocked, they run to her and see that she suddenly has a lot of debt. Save confesses that Boss made him trick her into investing in a failing stock. Jack also notices that her contract has the same wording Save used to advise him to invest.
He puts two and two together and realises Save is also responsible for his grandmother’s illness. Hope tries to de-escalate the situation as Save has no choice. But Jack is furious and never wants to see Save again.
Back at the shrine, the residents are too scared to join the Four Little Pigs in holding off the thugs. Nang too has given up since the Four Horsemen have fled and Boss is running around unchecked. However, Hoi encourages her to fight and seeing her, the residents agree to join them.
However, Boss has enlisted Carbon to hold the kids hostage at the school. Toi Ting distracts him as the rest of the kids run to the shrine. But they reveal that if the parents run, the kids will be taken as collateral. Aran is upset about the lengths his dad is going to while Joke notices Toi Ting is missing.
She is cornered and Carbon has no qualms about killing her as Boss will protect him. The Four Little Pigs are too late as he throws her off the landing. She is rushed to the hospital and Dr. Suthi promises to take care of her. Jack comes running and he blames Save for everything. At the end of Episode 10, Joke believes it is his fault as he tells Jack that he gave the ring to Boss. Jack is upset that it is once again Joke who is the root of his problems.
The Episode Review
Leave it to Thai BLs to give us angst and trauma right when things are looking up. We just can’t seem to have nice things, can we? It should be a track record with the way we barely get 10 minutes of happy Jack and Joke in their dating era before everything is ruined.
And what’s up with the miscommunication, boys y’all just got scolded by Grandma previously for it! How hard is it for Joke to clearly explain that he exchanged the ring for Jack’s freedom? If it’s up to us, we’d end Jack & Joker Episode 10 with Suthi reconciling with Joke.
By the way, the conflict is getting a little fuzzy now. So, Nang is not the mastermind we thought she was. Why did she help Boss get the ring if she knew her brother (Brother!? Now that’s a plot twist) is volatile and wouldn’t even spare her?
And how does this non-magical one-ring-to-rule-them-all trope exactly work? How does Boss have the backing of the country that allows him to do whatever he wants with just a ring? We doubt the show will go into details but we hope they don’t bank too much on the ring since it is very clearly a poorly thought-out plot device at the moment.
