In recent years, Netflix has put a big focus on making creative food shows with a twist, with shows like Nailed It, Best Leftovers Ever, and, of course, Is It Cake. Continuing this trend is the second season of Is It Cake, which is titled Is It Cake, Too?

One of the unique things about Is It Cake? is that it tries to make it seem like a baking game show, with contestants and hosts playing guessing games in hopes of winning cash prizes. The norm for continued seasons for these kinds of shows is to introduce something new and different or something more difficult for the contestants to do to pique viewer interest. However, Is It Cake, Too? falls short.

The main thing that is new in season 2 is the introduction of cake sets, where the host, Mikey Day, comes out on a rotating “cake wall” that is set up to look like a set (college dorm, sports stadium bleachers, etc.). Everything on the set looks real, but some of the items are cake, and the contestants have to guess what is cake in order to get competing priority.

But this is pretty much the only significant thing that varies from the first season of Is It Cake?, and it is not in every episode. With the exception of the show-stopping season 2 finale, bakers still make much of the same things that they did in the first season.

In season 1, we saw a lot of shoes and bags, and in Is It Cake, Too?, we see bakers make at least three shoe fakes, and a few bags, too. There are so many more things that bakers can replicate (literally almost anything), so why are we seeing more of the same stuff? If there is another season, the producers are going to have to throw in some more excitement and variety if they want to retain viewers.

Each episode of season 2 has a random theme. Early on, there is a gym-themed episode where bakers replicate sports equipment (a yoga mat, weights, etc.). There is a 90s-themed episode, some other random themes, and then another sports-related episode. This recurrence is pretty boring as well. Another sports-themed episode is not what viewers expect to see or want to see.

Like in the first season, the show is also full of forced jokes and laughter. With comments like “batter hurry” and “Hello, the 90s are calling,” they’re likely to leave a cringe on the face of the viewer.

Something else that doesn’t sit right is that Is It Cake? boasts the “world’s” top cake artists, but everyone appears to be American residents. It would be more interesting and accurate if the reality show actually featured people living all around the world.

One thing is for sure: Is It Cake, Too? lacks focus. It doesn’t have the goal of making the replicas more challenging or interesting, and it doesn’t have an overall theme or a pleasant mix of episodic themes. That said, there is some fun in guessing along with the judges and contestants whether an item is a cake, but still, do better, Netflix.

  1. What Lexi said about Spirit and Rob. When the judges didn’t pick Spirit’s obviously fake helmet, but picked Rob’s very well done food carrier with all it’s components, and they couldn’t even justify their reasoning, I turned it off. I could speculate on why the judges made that decision, but why bother. The show would be fairer if the judges were judging blind (doesn’t know whose cake is who’s)…otherwise, pfft. (Although, I think the decision of which cake wins is made in advance and the judges are told whom to pick. Just my two cents.)

  2. The show was rigged! Stopped watching after ep 3. I gave it many chances but 🤮. Terrible acting from the judges who wasn’t able to locked up the answers. Liz got eliminated was so unfair. Modifying the objects to look like a cake was way out of the main purpose of the show. Don’t waste your time on this.

  3. It’s super weird that you all call altering the decoys “cheating” when some people do it, even though every contestant did it and it’s clearly not against the rules.

  4. Season 2 was so rigged. Spirit kept cheating and modifying every decoy and I still don’t understand how she made it to the final even though she never won an actual round and the judges were fooled by her obvious cakes. Pete was robbed of his spot in the finale by her shitty unfinished helmet that literally had chocolate coming out of it. Corterrius also should’ve made it farther and Liz was eliminated because of the judges own mistake which was super unfair. And the 1 decoy earlier in the season was not cool! This season was so rigged

  5. Season 2 is not nearly as good as Season 1. Only allowing 1 decoy means its always a 50/50 guess and that is way too easy when comparing cake to real items. You’ll always be able to tell which one is cake. They did themselves in with this season.

  6. I love the idea and the comradely even though they are all competing against each other.
    I Absolutely hate the cheating!!!!!
Altering decor items to fool the judges is straight up deceitful. The premise of the show is that these are very skilled cake artists that can make everyday objects into cake but when it doesn’t go their way, they change the look of the decors to throw off the judges. I won’t watch another season if they allow cheating. :-(

  7. My 12 year old daughter and I loved the first season (except the one time a contestant modified the “decoy” to help him win). We can do with/without the host but this season, the cakes are worst and all the contestants now modify the decoys to help their “less realistic” cakes fool the judges !
We really want to know who makes the cakes for the show ! They are the “real artist” !

  8. Yep, 50/50 judging means why bother. Totally coin-flipping trash this season. I stopped after the first round of E1. No thansk, and I loved the first season.

  9. I think altering the real items to look like a crappy cake is like cheating. The goal should be to make the cake look like real not vice versa.

  10. Its amazing how they made their cakes. I just dont like and hate is the host. Its he doesn’t care with the food he is just care with the show. I hate it everytime he cut the cake. Not careful and the cake fell in the floor. I think better change host.

  11. I think the host is fine, but why did you switch it up to only 2 cakes it’s not fair, I think you should of stuck with 5 or 6 cakes it’s too easy and not fun to watch anymore

  12. The host does suck, but the worst is the fact that some of the cakes are so bad that they have to make the real items look as crappy as the cake they made.

  13. I’m watching is it cake too. I love watching these people use their craft & talent to make these incredible cakes. What I DON’T like is the host. I think you can look & say funny things without being a complete idiot. I find that there is absolutely nothing he does or says is funny. I actually roll my eyes which is a lot & makes me dizzy when he does anything! Get another host!!!

  14. Saw E1 of S2 and it was just so bad. First Mikey Day is a terrible host. Second, the shoe made looked so fake but wasn’t picked as cake, told me this was rigged. Many other issues as well. Just too bad to continue.
