Invisible City – Season 2 Episode 1 “My Biggest Wish” Recap & Review

My Biggest Wish

Episode 1 of Invisible City season 2 starts back in the Amazon Rainforest, years after the dramatic events of season 1. Workers led by a guy called Danilo are searching for gold, desperate to exploit the forest for its riches. A large pool of murky, brown water sits in the middle of their operation, and something big pulls in one of the guys. Danilo promises to “get it this time” and grabs his sniper, shooting the creature and using a digger to bring it up in a net. It turns out to be a massive snake in a net.

This snake, strangely enough, transforms into a human that nigh. Danilo taunts the indigenous man, asking him if he’s the key into Marangatu. He wants to take the gold out of there and believes this guardian is the key.

Meanwhile, Luna hasn’t given up the search for her father. She’s older now and joins Ines as they head up the river, determined to find Eric. After he stabbed himself to save the others, he was brought deeper into the forest by those from inside Maragatu. Ines senses a strange power, something that keeps her out. Luna has dreamed about this and points out she should be the one to lead them. And it seems to work!

“We should go back, this place is not ours,” Ines says as they approach a strange glistening pool. This place marks the route to Marangatu, but Ines gets cold feet and decides they should regroup, at least until she can figure out what sort of power they’re dealing with.

It’s taken them two years to get here and Luna is not happy that they’re just giving up. Back at the boat though, Luna retreats to her cabin where a strange book opens up to reveal details on Matinta Pere. This is enough for the girl to sneak out at night, eventually summoning the trickster witch. Matinta promises Luna that she can grant any wish, but Luna just wants to see her father.

An unnerving laugh ripples through the air, as Matinta tells Luna that if she’s to grant the wish, then she needs to give her back something in return. Foolishly, Luna agrees, as Matinta pierces the air with a shrieking cry.

Just like that, Eric wakes back up in the pool of water we saw earlier in the episode. He crawls out, poking a gaping knot on his chest tentatively before staggering through the forest. As he does, he happens upon Danilo with the indigenous man he captured from before. When Danilo shoots the guy several times, Eric becomes spooked and rushes off, stumbling into the mining site. There, he finds a seer called Lazo tied up. Eric frees him but when Danilo returns, Eric knocks over a lantern, blowing the entire base up with a huge explosion.

Danilo returns to the Belem of Para, speaking to his boss about what’s happened. Danilo is just a pawn in this game, it seems, as the real players are here, back in town. Debora and Castro are their names, and they’re not happy that all their equipment has been destroyed. Debora points out that she’s been mining in the name of her father, determined to find Marangatu no matter what.

Lazo happens to have survived the initial explosion too and he ends up back at the church, revealing that they’ve found someone to help “lift the curse.” As for Eric, he wakes up in a hospital bed to find Telma there, asking questions about the explosion. Eric admits he doesn’t know anything, but when the detective leaves, a young boy called Bento shows up and bites through his cuffs, encouraging him to follow in order to find his daughter.

A chase ensues through the hospital, as Telma and another policeman scramble after him. Eric manages to evade them and continues to follow Bento.

Ines shows up in the forest the next day, apologizing to Jaciara (the villager elder) for trespassing and admitting she had no intention of invading Marangatu. The thing is, the elder knew she was coming, and points out that “the girl” (Luna) was the one who brought her here.

With the sunlight giving way to night, Eric watches as the boy transforms before his very eyes. He wants Eric to free him from this curse. Since coming back, Eric now has the ability to take on others’ abilities. He does this to Bento, freeing him of the “Wolf Boy” curse and giving himself a heightened sense of smell to track down Luna.

Luna and Eric are finally reunited as a result of all this, but when Eric sees Ines, she knows more than she’s letting on. Sitting together in confidence, Eric brings up Gabriela and her “mission” for him. Eric appears to have been kept in the river until such a time that he was needed to help Marangatu. And that time comes in the form of Matinta’s magic. “You can run away from this,” Ines says as Eric prepares to leave with Luna.

Eric refuses to drag Luna into all of this, wanting a normal life for her. The thing is, the wheels have already been set into motion. Our tricksy witch Matinta appears before Luna and decides to take her. After a shrieking cry, all that’s left in the room is an owl, that looks over at Eric before leaving.

The Episode Review

Invisible City is back and one of the best parts of the first season came from seeing all these different myths and legends brought to life. It certainly helped the show stand out and here, we get an enjoyable but rather rocky opening chapter, explaining Eric’s return through Matinta’s magic.

The story this time wastes no time picking up the threads of the first season’s narrative, with Luna presumably the “chosen one” here, evidenced by Matinta’s interest in the girl.

With only five episodes this time around (which is a big disappointment) this looks to be a quick watch but hopefully an enjoyable one!
