IF Plot Summary
As a young girl, Bea loved singing and dancing but a lot changed after her mother’s death. At the age of 12, Bea is sent to live with her grandmother while her father is in the hospital getting surgery. Her father tries to cheer Bea up and asks her to think of a story from her time back at her childhood home.
Bea looks through her stuff from when she was a child and finds a handycam with videos of her singing and dancing with her parents.
Suddenly, Bea starts seeing animated creatures who are just as shocked to be noticed by her. One day, she meets Cal, a man who lives with these creatures and can see and interact with them just like her.
Who are the IFs?
Cal introduces Bea to Blue and Blossom, two IFs who live with him. Blue and Blossom tell Bea that the IFs are Imaginary Friends that many children made when they were younger. Upon growing older, the worries of the world and the hustle of life caused them to forget their IFs. Blue reveals that Cal was trying to give the IFs new homes so that they don’t disappear.
Bea, at first, wants to stop seeing the IFs but eventually decides to help Cal. Cal refuses to take Bea’s help at first but eventually takes her to meet Lewis, an elder IF. The IFs all live in a shelter home that Cal manages. Lewis asks Bea to reimagine the shelter home in her mind. Bea starts having fun with the IFs and decides she wants to help Cal match the abandoned IFs with new kids.
Does Benjamin accept a new IF?
When Bea goes to the hospital to visit her dad, she meets Benjamin who is a patient at the hospital. Benjamin is a clumsy little kid who is lonely. Bea decides to look through the existing IFs and find one that Benjamin would love to hang out with. However, Benjamin is not able to see any of the IFs. Bea is disappointed and thinks about what she can do to help the IFs.
Lewis tells her that the people who imagined the IFs are now adults. They were people who did not have childlike wonder as they were busy with the trappings of the adult world. After Lewis’ advice, Bea starts looking for the adults who imagined the existing IFs when they were little and decides to reunite them with their imaginary friends.
Who imagined Blossom?
That night, Bea is talking to her grandmother who tells her how she loved to dance as a child. Bea goes to see Cal and discovers that Blossom is her grandmother’s IF. Bea plays some music at home which makes her grandmother want to dance. She reconnects with Blossom which makes Bea very happy.
Who imagined Blue?
Bea sets out to find the person who imagined Blue and learns that Jeremy is nervous and tries to give himself a pep talk before an urgent meeting. She urges Blue to meet Jeremy in the men’s room but Blue panics and ends up sneezing, startling Jeremy. Jeremy tries his best to ignore Blue which further causes him to lose confidence.
Bea recalls how Jeremy loved croissants and brings a few of them to Jeremy to think about Blue. Jeremy finally gives in and reconnects with Blue. Blue gives him the motivation he needs before the meeting. Outside, Blue hugs Bea, thanking her for her help.
What happens to Bea’s dad?
That night, Bea and Cal make it back home and Cal is very happy. However, at home, Bea learns that her father is not waking up after his surgery. She panics and rushes to meet Cal. Bea tells him that she is not ready to lose another parent after her mother’s death. Cal tells Bea that she should focus on telling him the story he had asked her to think about.
At the hospital, all the IFs show up and motivate Bea to talk to her dad. Inside the hospital room, Bea tells her dad how he always inspired her and asks him to never leave her alone. Bea’s dad wakes up and reassures her telling her that he was okay. Bea hugs her dad and goes outside to tell her grandmother everything is okay.
Does Bea remember Cal? Does Cal return to Bea?
Outside the hospital room, Bea notices that the IFs are no longer present. Bea goes looking for Cal and the IFs and learns that the flat that Cal lived in had been unoccupied for years. Bea is confused but her dad takes her back to their home. Bea drops a box of her childhood toys and finds an old drawing she had made of her mom and dad taking her to the carnival.
The drawing includes a clown named Cal which makes Bea recall that Cal was actually her imaginary friend. She takes the drawing to Cal’s apartment and apologises to him for not remembering him sooner. She closes her eyes and urges him to come back to her. Cal shows up along with all the other IFs and Bea promises never to forget Cal again.
How does IF end?
As Bea leaves with her dad, Grandma starts talking to Blossom. Meanwhile, Blue also reunites with Jeremy and Cal helps the other IFs reunite with the people who imagined them as kids. Benjamin ends up accepting the dragon IF and as it turns out, the invisible IF that often caused Cal to trip was Bea’s dad’s imaginary friend.
