House of Ninjas – Episode 4 Recap & Review

The Resurrection

House of Ninjas episode 4 starts with a flashback to the night Mukai was kidnapped, and Gaku died. Moments after Gaku was stabbed, Yosuke stood up and killed the leader of the Fuma. In doing so, he became the Fuma Kataro, the 19th.

After the bloodshed, the Fuma (led by Yosuke) reconvened at their base and pledged to stay low, build power and attack when the Shinobis were cast off the shadows. It was a strategic move by the 18th clan to make sure the clan achieved their destiny. Among the Fuma, we see Wasabe, the murderer cop. Presently, Wasabe goes home to find his wife killed along with his child.

Elsewhere, Karen waits for Haru to finish his talk with Yosuke and bombards him with many questions. Haru refuses to answer them and says he is trying to protect her. They head to Karen’s house, and she confesses that she was the child who was saved from a fire a few years back. She was the only survivor. After this, she started looking into the case and found out that the target of the fire was her dad. He was a bureaucrat with government information. She asks Haru what is happening and claims she is not as naive as he thinks.

She proceeds to show him all the evidence she has collected over the past few years, from the fire to the Mukai incident and the cruise ship murders. She has been researching and concluded there is an organisation behind the country’s unsolved mysteries. She has also been spying on Haru and his family. She thinks there is more to all the deaths that happened the night Mukai was kidnapped. She also talks about Gaku’s death, which was listed as a suicide.

She believes Gaku didn’t commit suicide and Haru is not exactly surprised but only says he is to blame and starts walking out. Karen informs him that she will still write a tell-all article on the story.

Haru says nothing and leaves. He meets with Hamashima and gives him an update on how the Fuma reinvented themselves as Gentenkai. Hamashima worries about how much Karen knows and orders Haru to do what he must. In turn, Haru steals Karen’s article, research materials, and any evidence she has, including the yellow flower. He burns the paper trail and hands the flower to the agency for analysis. Karen is pissed when she goes to give her pitch to an interested media outlet and finds everything gone.

At the brewery, Souichi apologises to his sales manager since his family failed to show up for the photoshoot. She says it is okay and asks for an apology dinner. She also informs him about the subsidy from Cultural Affairs. Finally, Souchi realises that Yoko is working for Hamashima. He immediately calls the man and confronts him about rehiring Yoko.

Souichi insists they want to be a normal family, but Hamashima says it looks like some family members are unhappy with their lives. He asks Souichi to face the truth and stop being stubborn, and he should return to his Shinobi roots. Souichi warns him to stay away from his family.

Back at the Jazz club, Matsuura apologises to Yoko and says he needs to leave urgently. Yoko pulls him back and asks him to stay. For the first time, Matsuura disobeys an order and hangs around. He confesses his feelings, but his boss calls again, forcing him to leave. Yoko follows him to a strange building downtown. However, her phone dies, and she leaves vegetables as a trail to her location.

At the same time, Oki discovers that Matsuura was the passenger who survived the cruise incident. He is the perpetrator. Hamashima quickly employs the help of the pigeons to find her, and the pigeon even alerts Souchi that his wife is in trouble. Souchi also has a conversation with Taki, who asks him to stop hiding his feelings, leading Souchi to rush to Yoko’s defense. In his rush, he fails to notice that Riku sees him wearing his Shinobi outfit.

Meanwhile, Nagi recruits Kyotani’s help to escape the detectives following her and meets with Ninja X. She manages to fool the female detective. Still, the male detective, Omi, anticipates her moves and follows her to the meeting. Nagi thought she was about to meet Gaku, but it turns out to be the lady by Yosuke’s side. She attacks Nagi, and Yoko shows up out of the blue; Matsuura was coming to this warehouse, too.

An intense fight begins, and Nagi loses consciousness. Thankfully, Yoko can hold her own against the Fuma clan until Souchi arrives. Don’t forget that Detective Omi is lurking in the dark, watching this intense fight go down. Finally, the Tawara claims victory, and the agency takes Matsuura in for interrogation. They also take Detective Omi too.

After failing her pitch, an angry  Karen heads to the train station. The episode ends with an old woman shoving Karen towards the rails as a train approaches.

The Episode Review

The cliffhanger at the end of the episode left us on the edge of our seats. It is not a surprise that Karen visited the Gyudon restaurant consistently to run into Haru intentionally. She targeted Haru and wanted to use him for her article. Is it sad? Yeah, but Haru kept secrets from her as well. We don’t know if she survives this attack, but we will be curious to see her next encounter with Haru now that everything has been laid bare.

We are also curious to learn what exactly Yosuke is planning. We might finally get a clue once the agency interrogates Matsuura. He is not a guy who will break easily. How will they get the information out of him?

Lastly, it was almost romantic how Souchi and Yoko fought together and saved Nagi. The way Yoko’s eyes lit up when she saw her husband in his Shinobi attire proves there is still a spark there.
