Holy Family – Season 2 Episode 2 “Away From God” Recap & Review

Away From God

Episode 2 of Holy Family season 2 starts with the police finding Lorenzo’s body at the pond. Gloria continues narrating what the last moments of the people she killed felt like. She admits she has never wondered about her last moment and how she will die.

The scene then cuts to Gloria meeting with Fernando in his hotel room. She shows him the picture of Natalia and strikes a deal with him. She orders him to go back to Argentina and take Natalia with him.

Fernando tries to reason with her to return Hugo/ Nico to Natalia, but Gloria insists she is Hugo’s mom. She brings up the fact that she carried the child in her womb and gave birth to him. She mocks Fernando’s faith, saying he was compliant with her being the surrogate for his grandchild.

We already know how Fernando feels about the kid; he even calls the child a “monstrosity.” If pushed against the wall, he will save his daughter and leave his grandson to drown. Gloria knows this and is counting on it to work in her favour. Ultimately, Fernando asks for Natalia to be delivered to his room later that night and seemingly agrees to Gloria’s terms.

After meeting with Fernando,  Gloria sets out to find Aitana. Abel calls to check on how the search is going, and Gloria says she might have figured out where his sister is. She heads to the bus stop and finds Aitana waiting for the bus to leave. Gloria convinces Aitana to give her another chance and promises to try to be a good mother. Aitana asks Gloria to set Natalia free and return her passport if she wants a second chance. They make a deal and return home.

Elsewhere, Pedro invites trouble when he looks into Gloria’s past. He is shocked to learn that she is considered a dead person. However, he opts to tread carefully since laying low is in his best interest. He wants to keep the baby Caterina left in his care and is willing to take any necessary risks.

After getting home,  Alicia visits Gloria and informs her of Lorenzo’s sudden passing. Of course, Gloria acts shocked and deeply troubled by the loss. They set off to comfort Blanca, who is beside herself with sorrow. Blanca and her husband are on the way to the police station, so Gloria heads back home.

At home, Aitana tries to convince Abel that their mom is dangerous and capable of killing Lorenzo. As expected, Abel sides with Gloria and refuses to believe she will kill a child. Someone open this boy’s eyes, please!

As soon as Gloria arrives, Aitana confronts her. Gloria plays innocent and swears on Santi’s memory that she didn’t kill Lorenzo. Abel starts getting pissed at Aitana for even thinking their mom killed Marcos and Lorenzo. Gloria notifies them that Natalia will leave later that night.

She then allows Natalia to speak on the phone with her father. Natalia tries to reason with her, but Gloria refuses to hear her out. Natalia loses her patience and reveals that Santi wanted to leave Gloria.

In a flashback, we see how Gloria helped Santi the night he ran over a man. Santi was drunk, and Gloria promised to take care of it. As the man was still alive, Santi watched from the car as Gloria stabbed the man to death with a piece of glass.

Meanwhile, Aitana is still grieving Marcos and stays in her room. On the other hand, Abel visits Germàn at the hospital. He runs into Germàn’s real-life partner, and they start getting close. Of course, Abel approaches the man with false intent, hoping to learn more about Germàn. The man is Manu and has been dating Germàn for a long time. He tells Abel about Germàn’s job as a bodyguard and casually talks about their life together.

Back in the neighbourhood, Pedro runs into Claudia, who is trying to find her daughter. Pedro lies to her that Caterina and Germàn left suddenly with no goodbye and won’t be returning. He then follows Claudia and learns she is a junkie. This hardens his resolve to keep the child.

Getting tired of being in her room, Aitana calls Felipa, and they meet up. Felip tells her about the private investigator his dad hired. Understandably, Aitana is curious if anything new has been found about the case. Unfortunately, there have been no new leads, but he promises to keep Aitana updated.

He talks more about his brother, and Aitana tries to help him know more about Marcos’ musical side and ambitions. She then suddenly gets sick and rushes to the toilet to vomit.

In the meantime, Blanca continues to mourn her son, and Ramon ( her husband) tries to comfort her. However, he doesn’t want to stick around.

Concurrently, Fernando hires a new guy to watch Gloria and asks him to get Nico. The new guy is Caterina’s acquaintance, keeping her safe in his house. She, like Germàn, is in a coma, and no one knows if she will wake up.

Gloria and Alicia visit Blanca again and comfort her as the day progresses. Gloria learns that the police will be looking into the CCTV footage around the neighbourhood, and she formulates a quick plan. On her way out, Pedroa asks her about Caterina and the baby. She denies knowing much about Caterina, and Pedro continues to act a fool.

Gloria does countersurveillance to check how many cameras are on the route she used to drive to the pond. While the police interrogate Pedro and Alicia, who point their fingers at Ramon, Gloria convinces Abel to steal the surveillance footage of the camera she spotted on the route.

Once again, Abel blindly does as ordered because Gloria convinces him it is for their own good. He also helps Gloria remove the wallpaper on their van.

Meanwhile, Gloria takes notice of the new watchdog sent by Fernando. She decides to set Natalia free once the darkness takes over. However, Natalia refuses to leave without Nico. She tells Gloria that Nico is not Santi and will never be. Gloria tries to threaten her with a gun, but Natalia stands her ground.

Gloria changes her plan and asks Aitana to look after Nico when she runs an errand. With Abel out, stealing the CCTV footage, Aitana is left at home to watch Natalia. Natalia is aware that Aitana is the weak link and uses this opportunity to convince the young girl to let her hold Nico.

Gloria decides to stop by the police and gives false testimony about seeing a mysterious man around the neighbourhood talking to Lorenzo. She tells the police she also saw the man at the pond earlier that day, looking frantic in the park near the pond.

Through a flashback, we learn that this is not Gloria’s first rodeo, giving false testimony to the police. She did the same thing when Santi hit a man with his car. She reported the car missing and ensured Santi got away with the crime.

The episode ends with Natalia refusing to hand Nico back to Aitana. They start screaming at each other. As the screaming match ensues, Aitana starts seeing the ghost of Santi loudly calling her name as if to warn her.

The Episode Review

The deeper we look at Gloria’s past, the messier it gets. Gloria has always been the kind of mother to do anything for her children. It has been established that she would kill to save her child. Seeing this side of his mom shook Santi, and he was ready to leave. I am starting to question if his death was an accident. I wouldn’t put it past Gloria to kill him after learning that he wanted to flee from her.

On the other hand, Abel refuses to see his mom for what she is – a monster. He is her ride and die and does as she instructs. All Abel cares about at the moment is Germàn and finding a way to be close to him. He needs Gloria to fix this mess and allow them to stay longer in this town.

For this, he will oblige her, but what happens when he butts heads with Gloria? Will his eyes be opened? Let us see what he finds out after watching the tape he stole.

Lastly, Natalia is about to find herself in an even more dangerous scenario as Aitana is unhinged. It might not be a good idea to test her at this moment. I hope she can find a way to take Nico and escape before it is too late. While we are still on Aitana, we can’t help but wonder why she came back. Is she trying to find evidence against Gloria, or is she truly hoping to make up with her mom?
