His Three Daughters Plot Summary
An elderly man named Vincent, who lives under the care of his step-daughter, Rachel, is on his deathbed due to his battle with cancer.
Rachel calls Vincent’s two biological daughters – Katie and Christina home to tend to Vincent in his final few days. Katie and Rachel end up having multiple arguments during the first few days of staying together.
Despite being the youngest among the three, Christina ends up between the two and tries to solve their arguments.
Why is Katie upset with Rachel?
Katie learns that Rachel was not able to get Vincent to sign the Do Not Resuscitate form in the event of his heart stopping. She blames Rachel for failing to sort this issue while Vincent is still conscious. The hospice worker, Angel, as well as the home nurse Mirabella show up to check on Vincent. Angel tells the sisters that their father could pass away very suddenly.
Katie decides to write an obituary for Vincent that they could release after his death but she struggles to find the right words to describe her father. The daughters then have more arguments when Katie blames Rachel for not feeding Vincent anything but apples as well as for smoking inside the apartment.
What happens after Benjy confronts Katie?
Katie suggests that Rachel is only waiting for Vincent to pass so she can take over the apartment. Rachel is pissed but Rachel’s boyfriend – Benjy defends her and has an argument with Katie. He states that Rachel when she has been the only daughter stayed around to take care of Vincent while Katie visited only once in a few months. This upsets Katie and she asks Benjy to leave.
Katie tries to apologise to Rachel but the latter refuses to listen to her sister. This causes the sisters to have an argument during which Katie suggests that Rachel is not Vincent’s daughter. Rachel breaks down at the comment and states how Vincent is the only father figure in her life that she can remember.
Do the sisters reconcile with each other?
With Katie and Christina there to tend to an unconscious Vincent, Rachel refuses to go inside the bedroom. When Angel tells the trio that Vincent could pass away any moment, Katie decides to get a doctor over who can sign a Do Not Resuscitate form despite Vincent being unconscious.
Katie and Rachel begin to bond over their mutual dislike for Angel. Christina asks Katie to seek Rachel’s help for the obituary. The three sisters start to find a way to bond. Christina tells Katie that the right words will come to her only after Vincent has passed.
Does Rachel enter Vincent’s room?
Rachel finally enters Vincent’s room and the three daughters spend some time with their father. The daughters decide to bring Vincent to his favourite chair in the living room and manage to put him on the chair.
The pulse alarm starts beeping but Vincent wakes up and pulls out the medical equipment out of his arms. He starts to tell his daughters the story of his first love and about his feelings towards his daughter. However, Vincent looks over to his favourite chair and realises that he is having a post-death out-of-body experience.
How does His Three Daughters end?
The daughters weep for their father as they gather around his favourite chair where he passed away. The film ends with Katie, Rachel and Christina singing “Five Little Ducks” as they say their goodbyes to each other and return home. Rachel, who is still living in the apartment goes outside to have a smoke.
