Obsessed
Episode 8 of High Potential begins with a body found on the beach with a head wound. Morgan and her team are called to the scene, where Morgan discovers that the woman is still alive due to the Lazarus effect. Back at the station, they contact the woman’s boyfriend, who turns out to be significantly older than she is. It is revealed that the woman, named Penny, had lied about her identity to the older man she was dating.
Morgan and Karadec visit Penny’s house, where the landlord informs them about her previous boyfriend, who had died two years ago. The detectives also find expensive dresses and credit card bills. They soon uncover that Penny had been investigating her late boyfriend’s murder and had even put up a billboard seeking information. She had been dating the older man to gain access to an elite club where her late boyfriend had worked as a tennis instructor.
The detectives visit the club but fail to uncover much, except that one of the club’s owners, Blaine, was suspected by Penny of murdering her boyfriend. Blaine had a history of drug use and a poor reputation.
Meanwhile, Penny regains consciousness in the hospital but is unable to identify the culprit, as she was struck from behind. Reinvestigating her boyfriend’s case, Morgan notices rice grains stuck in his head wounds and deduces that he might have been killed elsewhere before being moved to the beach.
During their investigation at the club, Morgan observes a necklace similar to Penny’s—a gift from her late boyfriend a week before his death. It is revealed that Blaine’s married lover had given the original necklace to Penny’s boyfriend to silence him about their affair, while she kept a replica for herself.
Unable to stop thinking about the cold case, Morgan goes to Karadec’s house, where they spend the entire night trying to find a clue. Finally, Morgan solves the case. It turns out that Blaine’s brother, Edward, was the killer. He had struck Penny’s boyfriend with a snow globe (explaining the floating rice grains) to protect Blaine. Edward had also attacked Penny, luring her to the beach by posing as an informant.
The police rush to the club, but Edward flees to a cliff near the beach. Using Blaine, the police manage to convince Edward to come down, and he is arrested.
The episode ends with Morgan finally having a dinner date with Tom. Later, she visits Selena, who informs her that Roman had been meeting with a concierge who might know something about him.
