One of Us
Episode 7 of High Potential begins with the discovery of a dead man named Frank Webber in his RV. The scene cuts to a week later, with Morgan spending time with her kids when Ava shares her wishes for the “Yes Day,” one of which is to visit Morgan’s workplace. So, Morgan takes her along to the station. Unfortunately, her team is taken hostage by two armed individuals claiming to have placed bombs throughout the building. People are evacuated as Karadec and Oz, who were outside, arrive while Selena tries to assess the situation.
The captors inform Selena’s team outside that an innocent man was arrested, and they want the LAPD to find the real criminal responsible. A bit of digging reveals that the captors, who are army soldiers, are referring to Frank Webber’s murder case. Selena talks to the detective in charge, who claims it was an open-and-shut case with sufficient evidence against the accused, Logan Hansen. They review his interview and find that Logan had wanted to withdraw from an overseas posting to build a life with his girlfriend, Brook, and the police considered this his motive—believing that Frank refused Logan’s request, leading to Logan killing him in a fit of rage.
Meanwhile, it turns out that one of the captors is Brook, Logan’s girlfriend and fellow soldier. Examining crime scene photos, Morgan, one of the hostages, notices that the blood pattern suggests a missing paper, possibly taken by the culprit. Karadec visits Frank’s RV and discovers that Frank had printed out a charge form for submission to the military tribunal. Brook doesn’t believe it was meant for Logan, as Logan had been a model soldier. The team begins investigating to find the true culprit, while tensions rise in the building as Morgan finds Ava in the room. Ava apologizes, saying she couldn’t leave Morgan alone.
Karadec and Oz question Frank’s daughter about his whereabouts, and she reveals that he missed dinner with her on Monday. With her help, Morgan and the team unlock Frank’s phone and deduce he may have taken someone from the bar to a detox center. Karadec and the team investigate further and find CCTV footage of another man. By this time, however, Brook’s accomplice, Jeremy, begins to panic.
A detective and Tom, the cleaning guy, attempt to subdue Jeremy, but Tom ends up shot in the leg. Morgan, having figured out that Brook and Logan were trying to have a baby, which was why he wanted to stay with her, appeals to Brook as a fellow mother to let Tom receive medical help and manages to send Ava out with him.
With Ava and Tom gone, Jeremy becomes increasingly unstable. Brook tries to calm him, emphasizing that they did not want anyone to get hurt. Morgan finally pieces things together and realizes that Frank may have been tracking someone by placing a tracker on them, as they found no call records or messages indicating he was called to either location. Since the criminal did not know he was being tracked, Morgan deduces they may be able to catch him. Karadec eventually arrives and arrests the soldier. It is revealed that Frank, responsible for mentoring soldiers, had discovered the man was using drugs and was about to report him to the military tribunal for dismissal. This is why the man killed him and took the charge form.
Inside the police station, as the case is closed, Jeremy loses his temper, hits Brook, and grabs the remote control for the supposed bombs in the building. He demands a bargain from the police, but Morgan examines the device and realizes it’s a fake. It’s revealed that Brook never planted any bombs, and Jeremy is finally subdued. The case is closed as Logan is released, and the LAPD team exits the building safely.
The episode ends with Morgan visiting Tom in the hospital, where they joke about their ruined date. Later, she arrives at the office to a surprise thank-you celebration, with everyone gifting her a new desk of her own.
The Episode Review
The one-week wait was well worth it after all! This episode had everything we expect from High Potential—tense, gripping, and exhilarating as Morgan gradually unraveled the details of Logan’s case, helping all her coworkers, along with her daughter, safely walk away from the situation unharmed.
This episode also dives more deeply into Morgan’s character; though she sympathizes with Brook’s pain over Logan’s unfair arrest, she lets her know that she can’t forgive Brook for putting her child, Ava, in danger—something only Brook will understand if she has a child of her own someday. At the same time, it’s satisfying to see Morgan finally gain the recognition she deserves at her workplace as more officers acknowledge her abilities, realizing that she is one of them after all and deserves to be associated with the LAPD.
