High Potential – Season 1 Episode 10 Recap & Review

Chutes and Murders

Episode 10 of High Potential begins with a body being found at a playground. The victim is a nanny named Tara. The LAPD discovers that Tara was being followed by a suspicious man, so they begin digging deeper into the case.

Morgan and Karadec visit her employers, a queer couple, where one of the partners mentions, once again, a suspicious man following Tara. The man was reportedly reading a French newspaper and had a limp. Luckily, Morgan knows the exact place where French newspapers are available, and the two follow the lead, only for Karadec to discover that the man is a retired LAPD officer now working as a private investigator. They find out that he was hired by none other than Tara’s employers—the same couple who had directed them to the private investigator.

Karadec and Morgan return to the couple’s house and uncover that one of the partners had hired the private investigator to look into Tara and had also set up multiple nanny cams in the house. They reveal that the partner had done this because their child had been mistreated by a previous nanny, an issue that had been brought to their attention through a Facebook group. Upon further investigation, they discover numerous posts accusing Tara of mistreating their child as well.

Following this lead, Morgan and Karadec meet Carina, the person who had made the posts about Tara. Carina claims that apart from her first post about the previous nanny, she hadn’t made any further posts, as she began receiving threatening messages. She even deleted her Facebook account entirely.

Next, Morgan and Karadec search Tara’s house and find the contact information for a law firm specializing in immigration cases. While investigating further, they discover that Tara had been close to Carina’s husband. Interviews with the nannies reveal that Carina had once confronted both Tara and her husband at the playground. This raises suspicion about Carina, prompting the team to question her at her workplace.

Carina explains that her anger had been directed at her husband, not Tara. Her husband also clarifies that he and Tara were merely friends and had no romantic involvement.

While speaking with Carina, Morgan pieces everything together. He realizes that all the accusatory Facebook posts had been made during the children’s story-time around noon, which also happens to be the nannies’ break time. It becomes clear that the nannies had been bullying Tara, particularly one nanny named Oksana, who had been upset because Tara had replaced their former group member, Rosa.

Morgan deduces, using clues from Tara’s apartment, that Tara had discovered Oksana’s bullying and threatened her. Tara knew Oksana was an immigrant and threatened to expose her, hoping to make her stop. In retaliation, Oksana struck Tara. Although Tara managed to flee to the playground, she eventually died from her head injury.

Oksana is arrested, and the case is closed.

The Episode Review

With each passing episode, High Potential becomes more entertaining. Since the first episode, the murder mysteries in the second half of the show have grown significantly more complex, with numerous red herrings skilfully woven into the plot. While the initial episodes leaned toward straightforward whodunits, the later ones evoke a deeper sense of curiosity, presenting multiple suspects—each with compelling motives.

This episode kept us guessing until the very end. The clues, such as the calendar markings, have become increasingly intricate. Morgan’s history lesson about the Great Schism between Eastern Orthodoxy and Catholicism adds an unexpected yet fascinating layer to the narrative, heightening the suspense surrounding the identity of the real killer. Overall, this is another great addition to the show’s repertoire.
