After years of waiting for some news on the Heaven Official’s Blessing donghua, the series has finally put out season 2. 2023 has been a good year as we also got audiobooks and manhua updates of the iconic Tiān Guān Cì Fú novels by MXTX which acts as the source material for Heaven Official’s Blessing.

Heaven Official’s Blessing is a hilarious Chinese animated series that follows the thrice-ascended martial god Prince Xie Lian. The only catch is that he has been demoted to a scrap god. As he goes about picking up missions no other gods are interested in, he starts unravelling a conspiracy that just may have him in the centre of it.

Season 2 picks up with the Ghost City arc from its novel, Tiān Guān Cì Fú with Jun Wu sending Xie Lian on a secret mission to Ghost City to find a missing heavenly official. This time, his companions are the over-friendly Shi Qingxuan and the rash and righteous Lang Qianqiu. But of course, nothing can ever come easy for Xie Lian as Ghost City is ruled by none other than San Lang aka the Ghost King, Hua Cheng.

The wait seems to be worth it as the animation of Season 2 has had such a glow-up, that it is extremely satisfying to just see the visuals, the smooth animation and the tiny details. Shi Qingxuan was most definitely a favourite among the animators and we are not complaining. Even the various locations from Ghost City and Heavenly Capital to Yong’an and Xianle, every bit is painstakingly added and helps immerse viewers into the story.

The characters’ arcs all seem to be progressing in such unpredictable directions that it is bound to shock anyone who hasn’t read the novels. Xie Lian goes from a bubbly and optimistic scrap god to a troubled soul who has a very misguided but good-natured sense of responsibility.

Jun Wu is subtly shady while Shi Qingxuan is a little pookie who must be protected at all costs. Feng Xin and Mu Qing most definitely have a complicated past with Xie Lian. By the way, Qi Rong is an absolute gremlin who we love to hate. And the ones who seem one-dimensional have some secret or something going on that is just hinted. And the payoff will be huge if the donghua is able to adapt every novel.

If we were to find fault, it is not an exaggeration to share that the pacing has been a little strange, to say the least. Season 2 completely covers the remaining arcs of Book 1, however, the action is quickly executed while the introspection and fillers drag on. This makes it seem as if the penultimate episode is the finale while the actual last episode is a special to hype up the season 3 storyline.

But with the wait and constant uncertainty of the show getting cancelled, us fans are happy with the fact that we got Heaven Official’s Blessing Season 2 in the first place. A lot of it seems fan service from the studio but you won’t find anyone complaining. Now all they need to do is renew the show to prevent heartbreak.
