What happens in the UNSC lab?
Episode 8 starts with John having a mysterious conversation, hinting at something dark and sinister in a distant facility. The scene then shifts to the lab, where Miranda is examining the device she recovered from an underground lab. She discovers that the spores on the device’s outer shell are alive and active.
The situation takes a tragic turn when Janine, a lab assistant, suddenly becomes hostile and fatally stabs a fellow scientist in the neck with a sharp object. It appears that Jenine’s sudden transformation is somehow connected to the strange device.
What happens to Kai?
As Kai and the Javelin Unit prepare to intercept the Covenant fleet, an explosion sends them hurtling into space. They manage to regain their footing and land on one of the Covenant ships. Meanwhile, Parangosky urgently communicates with John, asking him to reach the Halo before the Covenant. However, John chooses to ignore her, disconnecting the comms and subtly hinting that Parangosky is not as she appears.
Parez and Kai find themselves overwhelmed by enemy forces, but instead of pursuing the Halo Rings, John decides to help them. It’s clear that John is determined to prevent his friends from suffering the same fate as Vannak. He joins the fight just in time, easily dispatching a dozen Covenant aliens with his unparalleled combat skills.
Despite John’s intervention, Kai decides to sacrifice herself by crashing a Covenant ship into a Covenant Assault Carrier, giving humanity the upper hand in the battle.
What happens to Cortana?
After rescuing the Javelin team, John heads to the empty Covenant ship to save Cortana. Parangosky brings in Halsey to convince John to change his mind. Instead, Halsey provides John with information on how to breach the ship and locate Cortana. Upon infiltrating the ship, John discovers Cortana’s crashed hard drive.
However, Cortana reveals that she has integrated herself into the ship’s system and warns John that it’s too late, as the ship is on a collision course. Without hesitation, John smashes the ship’s console and integrates himself with the AI. The ship crashes, but John wakes up unharmed on the Halo Surface.
Master Chief and Cortana head to the control center, where they believe Makee and the Arbiter have gone. Along the way, Cortana explains that the Halo rings were constructed using technology far beyond human comprehension. She also suggests that every moment and battle John has experienced has led him to this crucial moment.
Who are the alien parasites?
Soren and Kwan arm themselves to rescue Laera and Kessler from their abductors. We discover that Kessler and Laera aren’t the only captives in the holding facility. We see Jenine and Ackerson in the next cell, with Jenine appearing to be infected by a parasite. As Soren and Kwan Ha venture further into the palace, they come across the guards, all dead and frozen in place. Soren hears his wife’s screams and rushes to their cell. Along the way, he encounters horrifying human-alien hybrids but manages to free his family and Ackerson.
The virus quickly spreads throughout the entire facility, infecting everyone, including Parangosky. Kwan and Soren come face to face with an armada of the infected. Kwan has another vision of the old cult leader, who tells her that only she can save everyone. It is revealed that the parasites are actually “The Flood,” parasitic beings capable of corrupting any and all life forms.
Soren and the others manage to escape, but Laera locks herself behind a door upon realizing she has been infected. Back at the facility, Miranda discovers that Halsey has also been infected. She decides to put her in a cryogenic chamber to halt the progress of the infection until she can find a cure.
What happens in the end?
John and the Arbiter finally come face to face, leading to an intense plasma sword battle between the two warriors. They unleash their powered punches, but ultimately, John emerges victorious, claiming the Arbiter’s life.
Following the Arbiter’s death, Makee offers John a chance to join her in using the Halo to eliminate all destructive forces in the universe, which would include both humans and Covenant, but John refuses, saying he can’t let her do that either.
Shortly after, a series of structures rise from the Halo’s surface, and UNSC forces enter the planet’s atmosphere. As the episode nears its end, Makee powers up the facility and walks inside, with John following suit.
The Episode Review
Halo season 2 has finally reached its conclusion, giving viewers the much-awaited faceoff between the Arbiter and John-117. Whether the ending is good or bad, satisfying or mediocre, is up for debate. However, the last episodes hint at a possible season 3.
Towards the end, the show introduces the parasitic alien species known as “The Flood.” If you’ve played the game, you’ll know that they are a major antagonist in the franchise, seeking to corrupt and control all sentient life in the galaxy.
Will we see the UNSC going against this aforementioned species in the next season? Only time will tell.
