Reach
Halo episode 4 begins, and we see a series of massive explosions shaking the planet Reach, causing the deaths of hundreds of civilians, including Parez’s family, who were in their homes while the explosions happened. It is clear that the Covenant has started to glass the planet, and like others, Reach is soon to be obliterated.
The explosions cause a massive power surge, and Soren and Dr. Halsey are freed from their virtual prison. Master Chief races to Fleet Com while Parez tries to warn others of the coming dangers, but John warns her against it, saying it will lead to chaos. John also battles a couple of camouflaged Covenant aliens who have taken to the streets to massacre humans. Like always, John comes out victorious and makes his way to the fleet with Parez.
Meanwhile, Halsey tries for a heart-to-heart with Soren, but he keeps shrugging her off. During the conversation, Soren learns that it was Halsey who allowed him to escape decades ago. As they move forward, they come across dozens of fallen marines and immediately realize that the Covenant is on Reach. They also arm themselves in case trouble comes their way.
John makes his way to Fleet Com and encounters Riz, who has been trying her best to fend off the alien attackers. However, the expression on Riz’s face suggests that fighting is futile as Reach has already been overrun. As for Riz and Soren, they find Cortana, who advises them to run. Unfortunately, before Halsey can make sense of the situation, she is disabled and stolen by Makee.
As the episodes progress, John reaches the Fleet Com and reunites with Vannak, who informs John that their armor is missing from the armory, probably taken away on Ackerson’s orders. John also meets Keyes, who apologizes and acknowledges that John was right all along about Covenant plans. Keyes informs that the Covenant is trying to take out Mac Array so the Covenant ship can breach the atmosphere and begin the glassing.
In the hour of need, Keyes gives a passionate speech, asking his marines to fight and not give up on Reach till they draw their last breath. Even though every Marine knows they’re not going to survive the day, they don’t step back and swear to hold the enemy at bay so civilians can be evacuated. Keyes also plans to join the Marines, but John convinces him against it, stating he’s too valuable for the world to lose.
Halsey and Soren make their way to the Fleet Com, and the latter informs him that Mackee is alive and has stolen Cortana. Soren is adamant about leaving Reach in the last shuttle, but soon, the hangar is attacked by Covenant forces. Soren picks up arms and tries to hold off the Covenant forces from harming the civilians. However, Keyes has to sacrifice himself in order for the last shuttle to leave.
The battle rages on as the Spartans fight tooth and nail to hold off the alien invaders. Without their suits, they’re at a disadvantage, but they refuse to back down. When an Elite tries to take out John, Makee steps in and halts the alien from delivering a fatal blow.
Tragically, Vannak doesn’t escape unscathed and falls to the blade of a Covenant Elite. With heavy hearts, the remaining Spartans rally and drag John to safety as the haunting melody of a somber tune echoes in the background, showing how much they’ve lost today.
The Episode Review
Despite being significantly stronger, smarter, and more agile than normal marines, the Spartans are far from invincible, especially when stripped of their armor.
The death of the Cobalt team and Vannak, a renowned Spartan known for his agility and strength, is a stark reminder of their vulnerability. As Reach teeters on the brink of falling, the fate of John and the remaining Spartans hangs in the balance. Will they survive to fight another day?
