Gyeongseong Creature – K-drama Season 2 Episode 1 Recap & Review

Episode 1

Episode 1 of Gyeongseong Creature Season 2 begins with a mysterious biker rushing somewhere. While he is being chased, a Mr. Oh frantically looks for his son, Oh Ki-hoon. He approaches Madam Na who runs the operations and her agent is none other than Yoon Chae-ok who now goes by the alias Silverbill. Ki-hoon has been missing for 10 days and Chae-ok takes up the job to find him.

Back to the biker, he is surrounded by tons of masked men who all jump him at the same time. He puts up a good fight and kills most of them, but he is soon taken down. Captain Kuroko takes off the biker’s helmet and we see that the man looks like Jang Tae-sang. It seems like he has been a nuisance to Kuroko who knocks him out.

It cuts to the last shot of Season 1 as Tae-sang’s look alike, Ho-jae wakes up in his home. He has a surgical scar on the back of his neck. He is a P.I. and works with Jun-taek’s grandson, Yong-gil. They take up low-level cases such as exposing illicit affairs by recording them. Their next case takes them to a motel where coincidentally Ki-hoon has been hiding. He has sketches of the Najin but whoever he is running from finds him and kills him with Najin-like tentacles.

Ho-jae shows up at the same time Chae-ok does and a fight ensues as she tries to escape. She grabs the sketches and runs off while Yong-gil shows up with security. The men are shocked to see Ki-hoon’s corpse and to make matters worse, Ki-hoon was never their target – Ho-jae entered the wrong room. As Chae-ok runs off, the killer watches her and smiles.

The P.I.s are taken to the police station and it seems that they constantly lock heads with Captain Yuh. The cop points out that Ho-jae is the prime suspect and if he doesn’t want to take the fall, he needs to find the real killer in 10 days.

Kuroko is informed that the deserter is eliminated and he is sent a photo of Ki-hoon’s corpse. As the cops investigate, it is shown that Ki-hoon worked as a bodyguard for Jeonseung Biotech. Mr. Oh is heartbroken to hear his son is dead and begs Silverbill to find the killer. She spots Ho-jae via the motel’s CCTV and agrees to Oh’s request. We also see that she is wearing the bracelet Tae-sang had given her.

Meanwhile, Ho-jae is going through his recorded footage and all he gets is a glimpse of Chae-ok. Yong-gil wants to run off but he recalls his promise to Jun-taek and decides to help Ho-jae.

Yong-gil’s informants spot Chae-ok as she always waits on the roof of a building till sunset. Ho-jae follows her while the killer sneaks into her place. The killer finds a sketch of Tae-sang and looks surprised. He also has two different eye colours.

As for Chae-ok, she catches onto Ho-jae and confronts him. They fight, but once again she takes him down. But she finally sees him properly for the first time and tears up as she believes he is Tae-sang. Ho-jae is further confused as she calls him Master Jang and hugs him. It also seems like his ears are ringing when she calls him Master Jang.

Out on the bustling streets, there are tons of ads for Jeonseung Biotech which is known for its research on human betterment and evolution. Shin Ji-oh and Kato have written books on it which are best sellers. Onseong Hospital is one of the research centers for Jeonseung Biotech where the doctors are still experimenting on humans. At the end of Gyeongseong Creature Season 2 Episode 1, a “patient” is dropped in the same cage and a Najin shows up.

The Episode Review

Gyeongseong Creature Season 2 Episode 1 kicks off with much pomp as it is filled with parallels and Season 1 callback such as Madam Na, Tae-sang/Ho-jae having to do the leg work for a cop, the hospital cage, and blink-and-miss appearances from Wi Ha-joon and Choi Young-joon. But one parallel caught our eye and that is the leads’ first meeting. Back in Season 1, their first encounter had been with Chae-ok following Tae-sang while here, Ho-jae follows her.

And sure, while the allure of Season 1 had been the colonial setting, Season 2 has its own charm as it turns into a modern, gritty mystery where history repeats itself. How much do you guys want to bet that the killer is none other than Myeong-ja’s Najin-infected child? Then there is also Ho-jae’s chase sequence of which he has no memories. Apart from these 2 factors, not much happens in the first episode but it does set up an exciting stage for the action to follow.
