Grotesquerie – Season 1 Episode 6 Recap & Review

Episode 6

Episode 6 of Grotesquerie begins with Lois back at the hospital with the crazed woman. It turns out she never actually gave birth that day and the blood isn’t hers either.

Lois heads in to question the woman, who reveals her name to be Maisie Montgomery. She’s convinced the baby is hers and evades Lois’ questions. Lois though keeps fixating on the word Glorious, which Maisie uses a suspicious amount of times.

Maisie continues on, bringing up how there’s a great malefaction in town and knows that Lois has noticed it too. She taunts Lois, claiming the word is being used repeatedly as a way of “getting her attention” and chalks up their encounter to fate.

Outside the room, Lois finds out that the woman’s real name is actually Moira and she’s 67. She knows Glorious too, which eventually does get Lois’ attention to head over and see her. She’s at Spot 5 in a trailer park nearby, so Lois decides to head over and check on her. She’s wear her pimp gear, and she’s been expecting Lois.

It turns out Glorious was let out on witness protection in exchange for her spilling big details to Interpol about the nasty baby traders from Istanbul. With the full Turkish mafia dead, she’s been allowed to go. Glorious is not actually the killer and apparently she used Maisie as a sort of in-between courier to get the baby to Lois before the babe was sold off in Modesto.

Glorious’ little ambush with a couple of her cronies nearby goes awry, leading to Lois finding an Uzi inside the pimp’s purse, which will inevitably cause her to have a long stint behind bars. Glorious scoffs, pointing out that she’s being toyed with by a false prophet. She’s using Lois as a holy lamb, and Maisie was actually one of the congregants at the church.

Lois pores over the evidence back home, until she receives a taunting phone call playing choral music. A camera clicks outside, but as Lois heads out with her gun, she finds Nurse Redd showing up with a bottle of vodka as a peace offering. As she talks about her woes, Redd reveals that there’s another connection between her and Marshall. Apparently she knew him from before he was comatose. She was obsessed, attending all of his lectures (for several years in fact) and eventually trying her luck.

Nurse Redd’s antagonism stems from Marshall opening up to her about his family woes. Specifically, through Merritt eating herself into an early grave, and Lois drowning herself in alcohol. After hearing all of this, Lois gets her gun and threatens Redd, demanding she get out.

Back at the hospital, Lois approaches Maisie who admits she’s proud in her role in helping taking children from the “prophet of disassembling”. Glorious made her realize she was doing wrong, despite believing that the mother’s choices to let their children go condemned them to death.

Apparently Grotesquerie led Lois out to the fire pit earlier in the season on purpose, because this is The Breach. If he wanted Lois dead, Maisie is convinced that she would be dead already. He wants Lois to be a martyr, and eventually, she gives off the location to where the babies are, with a wry grin and a hard cut.

A tac team shows up at an abandoned plant and immediately clears the area, which is completely empty save for pregnant women hooked up to a machine, forcing them to give out breast milk and feeding the babies below directly.

Lois follows strange choral music through the plant until she discovers a strange shrine. This has tons of photos, all of Lois, pinned to the wall. As the women are saved by the other officers, Lois is shocked as someone with a knife threatens her. Lois suddenly spins round and shoots the guy, letting him bleed out, just as Sister Megan wakes up. Lois leans down and takes off the killer’s mask to reveal… fade to black.

The Episode Review

So by now it sees the killer is someone connected heavily with the church and has worked with other people as part of the congregation. They also seem to be a master manipulator too so it surely has to be Father Charlie right? It’s the only person here who logically fits the profile.

We do get some answers around Nurse Redd’s antagonistic behaviour though, which is a nice touch, while we simultaneously see more killings too. The contraption at the end with the pregnant women is absolutely shocking and definitely a gnarly way to end things.

However, it would appear that next week we’re going to move into exactly who this killer is and why they’ve targeted Lois and the others. For now though, this week’s double bill ends on a high, leaving plenty of unanswered questions!
