Episode 5
Episode 5 of Grotesquerie begins with us back on the road with Lois and Sister Megan. Here we learn that bloodstained woman from last week is called Andrea, and she wants them to drop her off at the nearby motel. Lois tries to talk to her, wanting to know who beat her, but Andrea simply rushes out the car and into the motel’s restroom.
Sister Megan believes there’s something going on with the smoke by the fire pit, debating over whether it could be mixed with hallucinogens. The pool outside is tainted purple, and Lois sees no trouble staying the night with Megan. Apparently this is the copper that’s turned the pool that colour.
Now, receptionist has done a pretty shoddy job at covering her black eye, and Lois is quick to point this out. Lois speaks to Megan after and realizes there are 2 battered women here but they can’t get involved unless either want their help.
In the time that they’ve left Andrea alone, she’s ditched her rags and with bloody footprints, raced through another house and to parts unknown. Megan doesn’t feel safe but decides to pray for comfort. Lois, naturally, is having none of it.
With bad news across the TV, Megan struggles to compose herself. While she does, Lois receives a call from Redd regarding her husband. Things definitely take a turn for the worst though when a couple of cars crash outside on the road. Megan jumps in to try and help them, and soon she spies Nick – an abusive man at the motel – drowning the receptionist in the pool.
Gunshots suddenly eminate and break out, as the masked man – presumably Grotesquerie – shows and snatches up a bloody Andrea, who’s just in her underwear. Sister Megan is shot for her troubles and bleeds out. She’s brought to the hospital, where Father Charlie arrives with wildflowers.
Lois tries to ask questions but Charlie turns it around and points out that she used Megan for bait and that they were followed. Charlie berates her and eventually forces her out the room. Naturally, Detective Hanover is outside and she brings up a long list of people who could hold a grudge against her. One in particular is a former pimp called Glorious, who was released two months ago. The timeline fits and Hanover simply retorts “strange days”.
The next day, there’s another murder. Lois is brought to the scene, which happens to be a maternity house connected to Saint Agnes Church where pregnant women decide if they want to give their children up for adoption or not.
The crime scene is another gnarly one. There’s writing up on the wall, and three women bled out with a perfect C-section missing their babes, who are presumably still alive. Whoever did this, knew exactly what thy were doing. Lois doesn’t want to give up but this is way too much for the detectives, and they’ve been forced off the case officially. Naturally, Lois refuses to listen and will keep going no matter what.
A clue comes in the form of a couple of kids who may know something. It turns out their mum was pregnant with a baby called Clancy. Lois believes this may be the next victim. The daughter trembles when she tries to give an appearance, so Lois stops her before she does, knowing she has enough to pursue this lead.
Lois drives out and finds her car up the road near a cornfield, abandoned and with bloody rags everywhere. A crazed woman is off in an orange field and she happens to be holding a newborn baby. She’s scared, and tells Lois that “he’s coming”.
The Episode Review
After last week’s slower double-bill, this week ratchets up both the tension and the thrills in a big way. The filming this episode is great, with one smooth tracking shot around the motel helping to accentuate the creepiness and ratchet up the tension to big heights.
Who is Grotesquerie? Well, I personally think it’s Father Charlie and have done for a while now. He’s connected to all these people, he has stamina and muscles to make a menacing threat and with good strength to lift bodies, and he’s also super interested in true crime as well, so it all fits.
With Sister Megan shot it does throw a spanner in the works so it does seem to rule her out of being the murderer. However, there’s still lots we don’t know and thankfully we don’t have to wait too long to find out what happens next!
