Keep the Family Close
Episode 2 opens with Dr. Miranda taking charge of the interns after Nick left for Boston in the last episode. Miranda stresses that the interns have much to learn before they can even enter the OR or handle a scalpel. Miranda gives them procedure logs and orders them to complete everything on the list.
Before going about her day, Miranda entrusts the interns to Schmitt and Helm. The two divide the interns into two groups. Meanwhile, we learn that Teddy is recovering well. Yusuda enters the room, and Teddy asks for her help. Teddy requests Yusuda to discreetly check on some of her patients and report back to her.
As the episode unfolds, the Best family rushes into the hospital, each with their own medical emergency. One has a cut on their leg, another can’t move their hand, and things look serious. At the same time, paramedics bring in an unidentified person with a gunshot wound to the chest. Mirada steps up to take charge, and Winston joins her. While treating the patient, they find that he has a surprising amount of money hidden in his clothes.
As they work on him, his blood pressure drops dangerously low, but thanks to Kwan’s quick actions, they manage to get his heart beating again. When Kwan asks to assist in surgery, Miranda refuses, saying that his procedure logs are still incomplete. This upsets Winston, who thinks Miranda is being too strict with the interns. Thankfully, the patient, later identified as Dorian, survives. Kwan updates Dorian’s parents on his condition and guides them to the ICU so they can see him.
Meanwhile, Schmitt and Warren are examining Dante Collier, a 33-year-old baker scheduled for surgery today for cholecystitis. Warren informs that Schmitt will be the lead surgeon, with himself assisting. While Simone is going through the results, she discovers that Dante has AIDS. When she tries to confirm this, Dante requests to see a different doctor.
Despite Warren confirming the same diagnosis, Dante becomes furious and decides to leave. However, as Dante’s condition worsens, he eventually agrees to undergo the surgery. Fortunately, the procedure is successful, and Dante is expected to make a full recovery.
Amelia examines Allie and suggests an MRI, suspecting a spinal injury. The scan reveals spinal discs pressing on a nerve, which, if not treated, can risk the baby’s life. The situation escalates in the operating room when the baby’s heartbeat drops, and the doctors have to urgently decide on a C-section. The surgery is successful, and Allie gives birth to a beautiful girl. Amelia confirms Allie is expected to fully recover to the Best family. As for the MVP title, it goes to Dr. Jules, who spent the day caring for the entire family.
As the day winds down, Owen visits his wife, Teddy, in her room, kissing her and asking her to take care of herself. Teddy agrees not to be a bother and to listen to her doctor, who also happens to be her husband. Later, Amelia invites Winston to join her for a burger.
Simone returns home and tells Lucas that now isn’t the best time for them to be a couple. Unfortunately, Lucas is upset, feeling like he’s always been a second priority to Simone. He makes it clear that from now on, they’re just roommates, nothing more and nothing less.
The Episode Review
Grey’s Anatomy is known for its portrayal of relationships and bonds between patients and doctors, and the second episode is no exception. Owen and Teddy’s relationship is stronger than ever, with Teddy promising to prioritize her health over work.
Miranda finds herself doubting her approach with interns, but her husband Warren helps her see that she’s being tough on them to instil the responsibility of being a doctor, much like how Miranda was once an intern herself and her days as a resident weren’t easy either.
However, the most intriguing segment is the one between Simone and Lucas. The episode hinted at them becoming a couple, but in the end, they drift farther apart than ever.
