The Grand Tour: One For The Road Review – A perfect send-off; thanks for the memories, chaps

A perfect send-off; thanks for the memories, chaps

22 years, thousands of adventures and both life-changing (and nearly life-ending) experiences later, the charismatic trio are on their last drive together. That’s right, Richard Hammond, Jeremy Clarkson and James May are back to sign things off on a high. And what a bittersweet journey it is.

Across 2 hours and 7 minutes of beautiful Zimbabwean landscape, the trio take to the road (and dirt) one more time for a farewell tour, reminding us why we fell in love with them all those years ago. This time, the journey is a simple trek west across Zimbabwe. But of course, it’s not smooth sailing.

One wrong turn, an alligator-infested lake, and a bittersweet tinge of warm champagne later, and The Grand Tour’s emotional farewell is just as strong as it was when the journey started all those years ago. It’s a shame in many ways, but as Clarkson himself puts it, electric cars are just “white goods and a bit shit” so it’s unsurprising to see this golden age of driving come to a close the way it does.

And what a way to do it. One For The Road is certainly one of the best specials the trio have done. There are so many throwbacks to the old episodes, including specific ghosts of journey’s past coming back as a beautiful piece of memorabilia (no spoilers here!)

As always, the production crew have done a great job with the editing too. The music is absolutely on-point, and the sweeping aerial shots of the majestic landscape do well to really show off the best this series has to offer. There are some nice little fourth-wall breaks too, long-running gags that get paid off (like the trio getting genuine gifts for each other) and the banter at the end of each day just as prevalent and humorous as always.

There’s a wistful energy to this one  and so many call-backs to not just The Grand Tour, but also Top Gear as well. In fact, it’s hard not to get emotional right at the end as you realize that these 22 years have been chock full of unforgettable moments. It’s a beautiful way to encapsulate the trio’s adventures, and even if you only know of the trio in passing, you absolutely have to watch this one. Farewell gentlemen, thanks for all the memories.
