Getting Started
Welcome to Granblue Fantasy Relink, which is the latest installment in the Granblue saga. Those who have played a Granblue game before will be right at home. For those who haven’t, this is a fun action RPG that should whet the appetite for JRPG fans everywhere!
When you first begin the game, choose an appearance. You can choose either a male or female, but when you’re ready, hit X to confirm. You can either choose the standard name or choose your own and again, hit X when you’re ready.
Grandcypher Deck
When you gain control of your character, head across the deck and speak to each of your crewmates by pressing Triangle nearby. There will be some dialogue choices here whilst talking to each, but the outcome doesn’t matter so much.
However, it is worth noting that whilst talking, there could be yellow text that shows up during dialogue. If you press Square at this point, it’ll open up a glossary and allow you to understand more of the lore and context for those unfamiliar with the original game.
Head on along and talk to the three highlighted people, indicated by the yellow markers above their heads.
Wyvern Attack
Once that’s done, a whole bunch of wyverns will swoop down and attack. If you press Square at any time, it will attack nearby foes. When you’re playing as the captain, you can mix this up by pressing Triangle to pull off some combos. This also allows you to do a Unique Attack too.
Make note of the UI in the bottom right side of the screen during battles. Hitting R2 will allow you to dodger attacks, while L1 will guard. Finally, pressing L2 is very useful during group attacks as it’ll let you hone in on one enemy in group encounters.
When the wyvern glows red, be sure to press L1 to guard against the attack.
It’s quite a straightforward fight in truth, and when you’ve defeated it, head toward Lyria and watch the cutscene that plays out.
Knock some sense into Proto Bahamut
Head toward Bahamut and wait for him to strike down with both claws on the deck of the ship (pictured below). When he does, pummel away with some strikes on its claw that’s still on the ship. Be sure to Lock-on and watch the other claw so you don’t get hit. Now, this does play out like a boss fight but given this is basically a tutorial, there’s not much in the way of a strategy with this one.
Lock-on to Bahamut with L2 and be sure to watch out for its slam attacks. It’ll roar and then lean in to attack, with a couple of well-orchestrated moves. Along with this strike, it’ll also lean against the edge with one hand and slam down with the other.
When it flies off, be careful as Bahamut will fly close and slam its fist all the way along the length of the ship. Be sure to dodge this.
He also has a splash damage attack (pictured above) where he’ll throw down a whole bunch of fireballs that will hit areas across the ship as well. Make sure you stand outside the red circles. Unfortunately the ship will begin falling, so just hold on and dodge the Reginleiv laser blasts and head up to the bowel of the ship to strike Bahamut right before it uses Skyfall.
Eventually you’ll do enough damage to defeat it, and complete the prologue.
