In The Name of Mother
Episode 7 of ‘Good Partner’ begins with Sa-ra getting fired. Although she complains about it to Woo-jin, he tells her that she violated the company’s policies by degrading its image and targeting its partners. In a brief flashback, we see that Woo-jin motivated Eun-kyung to fire Sa-ra based on her conduct.
But challenges at the company never cease for Yu-ri and Eun-kyung. The mistress with whom Yu-ri’s father cheated arrives at the company, showing Eun-kyung a written deed from Yu-ri’s father promising to transfer his house to her. However, the document is not legally valid. The mistress threatens to disclose Yu-ri’s protest at the company, which could ruin her reputation and cost her job.
Eun-kyung later visits Yu-ri’s mother and realizes that Yu-ri’s father was her client during their divorce case. She also discovers that Yu-ri’s mother had already paid the mistress a hefty sum, even though Eun-kyung advised her against it because the house deed was invalid. Yu-ri’s mother emphasizes that she did it for her daughter’s sake.
Talking to Yu-ri’s mother strikes a chord with Eun-kyung, especially now that she’s going through something similar. The next day, Eun-kyung makes breakfast for Jae-hee, who acknowledges the effort she’s making. Later, Eun-kyung sends snacks to her classmates at the academy, further warming Jae-hee’s heart.
On the other hand, Choi Sa-ra’s life isn’t as perfect. She increasingly feels insecure about her relationship with Ji-sang, especially now that she’s also lost her job. Despite Ji-sang’s protests about her showing up at his new house due to fear of his family’s disapproval, Choi Sa-ra does it anyway. They have a huge argument, where Ji-sang makes it clear that he has no intentions of remarrying and that his first priority is Jae-hee, not Sa-ra. Their relationship seems to be more chaotic than a roller coaster.
Elsewhere, Yu-ri’s father’s second wife visits Yu-ri’s mother and threatens her again. This prompts Yu-ri’s mother to consult Eun-kyung, providing evidence of the payments she made to the mistress and their recorded phone calls. Although their conversation is awkward, when Eun-kyung asks if her anger towards her ex-husband has subsided, Yu-ri’s mother emphasizes that whatever she did was for Yu-ri, as the child should have a father figure even when the parents are at odds.
Later, Yu-ri’s mother compels her to go on a blind date. When she’s leaving, she comes across Eun-ho treating his parents to coffee. Reflecting on it later, Yu-ri realizes she’s never done something like this for her mother.
That night, Jae-hee waits for Eun-kyung to come home, and for the first time in a while, she comes back early. Jae-hee is also more willing to communicate her feelings, telling her mother to visit her personally next time.
The next day, when the mistress returns to question why Eun-kyung hadn’t kicked Yu-ri out, Eun-kyung threatens her with the evidence she gathered from Yu-ri’s mother and expels her from the company in front of Yu-ri, winning even more of Yu-ri’s favour. Yu-ri later apologizes for thinking that Eun-kyung would take the mistress as her client.
Eun-kyung also reveals her involvement in Yu-ri’s parents’ divorce case, but Yu-ri thanks her for helping her mother get the divorce. Yu-ri later treats her mother to an expensive meal, both relieved that the specter of Yu-ri’s father is finally gone from their lives.
The episode ends with Eun-kyung weeping profusely as Ji-sang guilt-trips her about being an absent mother, while Sa-ra beams at the discovery that she’s pregnant!
The Episode Review
‘Good Partner’ is on the right track with this episode. It features many melodramatic elements that will appeal to those who enjoy tense, shocking developments in a show.
In addition to this, there are many feel-good moments in this episode, mostly revolving around Jae-hee and Eun-kyung’s budding relationship. The two seem to be working together now, with Eun-kyung genuinely listening to what Jae-hee has to say and Jae-hee clearly communicating her expectations to her mother.
At the same time, it’s satisfying to watch Kim Ji-sang and Choi Sa-ra finally face the consequences of their wrongdoings. However, it’s somewhat disappointing that much of the blame for the affair is placed on Sa-ra rather than Ji-sang as if she is the main culprit when Ji-sang is more at fault for his choices. While the show is entertaining, it does play into the societal stereotype of the “good” and “bad” woman.
