Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire Plot Summary

Godzilla x Kong sees the two titular monsters work in unison to stop a larger threat to Earth. The franchise film goes deeper into the history of the two monsters and that of the Iwi civilization.

The film features a gamut of new monsters who set the stage alight with their impactful appearances. In this explainer, we go deeper into the plot of the movie, breaking it down for our readers.

Requiem for a Dream

The movie begins with an explanation of the aftermath of the previous franchise film. Kong and Godzilla have each gone their separate ways. The former now enjoys more freedom in the newly discovered Hollow Earth while Godzilla’s resting place is the Colosseum. However, both are perturbed by an unidentified signal from the Hollow Earth. They aren’t the only ones affected. Jia also experiences hallucinations and sees recurring visions of a mysterious place with glowing pyramids.

This leads the trio to embark on separate journeys to find the source of this disturbance. While Kong goes back to the underground place where he found a vacant throne, Dr Andrews joins forces with Trapper and Bernie to take a HEAV to explore a different region. After coming across a carnivorous tree, they stumble upon an ancient temple. Upon discovering further, the party find out that the temple belongs to Mothra.

The Iwi civilization

Jia recognizes symbols from her tribe, whose members they soon discover. The Hollow Earth boasts of an entire undiscovered civilization of people who were hitherto considered to be extinct. The Iwi are suspicious of the invaders at first but when they see Jia and bring her to their leader, things change. They recognize Jia as an Iwi tribesperson who grew up on Skull Island. She is also key to an unfulfilled prophecy of tectonic proportions.

The quartet stumble upon the magnificent sight of glowing pyramids in a huge space that is protected by camouflage. The Iwi use gravity to their advantage by manipulating it to make heavy weights lighter. Jia is considered to be the saviour of the Iwi people in this unfulfilled prophecy who will reawaken the sleeping Mothra from its slumber. Mothra would be required in the event of a great war that will rage on between the Skar King and Godzilla.

Skar King’s bid to take over the world

In this prophecy, we also learn the history of the apes and Godzilla. The Skar King and other large apes waged war against Godzilla many years ago. However, the long-tailed monster got them under control, won the war, and imprisoned the apes in Hollow Earth. The King wants to get back to the surface and use another ancient titan, Shimu, to bring back the ice age and establish his rule. He runs a ruthless shift of large apes working for his plan. This is where Kong is headed after discovering the large apes.

Since they are hostile, he fights them off and stumbles upon Suko, a mini-ape who doesn’t like Kong at first. However, the duo bonds on their journey to the Skar King’s lair. The duo find themselves facing an uphill task as the King’s dextrous movements and a trump card in the form of Shimo turn the tide against Kong. He suffers a terrible frostbite and nearly escapes, thanks to Suko’s wit. However, one of the warriors from Skar’s tribe follows Kong and Suko.

Kong senses Jia in the temple and approaches her. The large ape sees this lair and the portal that opens into the earth. He goes back to the lair and informs Skar, who wastes no time in marching with his army and Shimo. Kong’s hand is tended to by Trapper, who uses Project Powerhouse to install a mechanical arm that gives the monster renewed power.

Suko sees Skar marching ahead with his army and duly informs Kong. Jia requests him to help them and Kong decides to go back up to the surface and bring back Godzilla into Hollow Earth to fight Skar’s army.

Godzilla’s supercharge

Godzilla is awakened from his sleep by a mysterious signal. He starts heading toward various sources of power to charge himself up to the brim. But what exactly is calling him? Godzilla also senses this threat to the Iwi in Hollow Earth and is preparing accordingly for yet another war with the Skar King.

Kong tries to invite him back but Godzilla sees this as an invitation to fight him. Kong does well to pin him down and gain the upper hand, but the supercharger means Godzilla is able to fight back.

Jia successfully awakens Mothra, who goes back to the surface and brings the two monsters in unison back to Hollow Earth. There, they face off against Skar and his army.

Ending Explained:

The fighting is intense. However, the Iwi are able to close the portal using an anti-gravity shock wave by clashing together the two pyramids. This allows Skar and Shimo to resurface to earth at Rio, which serves as the battle place for the final showdown. Godzilla and Kong also follow suit, fighting in unison against the impending threat.

The duo find it difficult to face Shimo’s ice-emitting streams but with Suko’s help, gain the advantage. It is not until Suko’s intervention to destroy the crystal that Skar used to control Shimo that the dynamics change. Kong and Godzilla now have the upper hand and successfully kill Skar.

Shimo also plays his part in finishing off Skar, who cruelly tortured him for ulterior motives. Godzilla nullifies Shimo’s iced breath with his own atomic breath to restore order. He quaintly goes back to sleeping at the Colosseum after all the fuss is over.

Kong heads back to Skar’s lair and takes over the ape army. They all follow him for his leadership skills and benevolence. Shimo is unchained and now a loyal servant to Kong for his generosity. Jia decides to come back to the earth with Andrews, choosing to fulfil her promise of always staying together.
