Episode 1 of Glamorous begins with Marco glamming it up on camera for his influencer content. He is trying to get his life together like the rest of us; he is figuring it out one step at a time. He is into make-up and most of his videos are about that. However, he is having a moment because he doesn’t have many followers.
The next day, his mom takes him to her office and excitedly explains that she’s got a job for him in the paralegal program. Marco is, as expected, not particularly jazzed about this job. His mom tells him that he needs a real job that will allow him to pay rent.
At 22, Marco has a different picture of how his life should play out. He wants more but that has not been happening given he has a part-time job at the mall selling beauty products. He is starting to think his mom is right which scares him.
Luckily for him, fate decides to give him a break and send Madolyn Addison, a former supermodel who runs a make-up empire, his way. He and Madolyn get off on the right foot and Madolyn offers him a job because he has that certain je ne sais quoi she has been looking for. He understands her consumers and that is something her other employees don’t have.
Later that evening, Marco convinces his mom to allow him to take the job at Glamorous by Madolyn. His mom is skeptical about him being a second assistant but ultimately agrees. What good mom can get in the way of her son’s passion and career?
The following morning, shows up for the new job slaying like he should but late. He meets Venetia, Madolyn’s first assistant who shows him around and introduces him to the staff. There is the Director of Sales, Chad, who is also Madolyn’s son. Chad is all abs but has no sense of humor.
There is also shy Ben who immediately falls for Marco and the cool Britt who work in product design. Lastly, we have Alyssa, the social media manager who refuses to follow Marco’s account. Once Marco gets to the Queen’s office, he feels inspired and Madolyn asks him to back up his confidence.
We learn through Marco’s vlog that he has been working hard in his new job, but in reality he has not been thriving. He has been flopping and Venetia is okay with it because she is scared to lose her job to Marco. Apparently, she got her job after the first assistant was fired; she can’t risk Marco slaying in his job.
Chad is working on convincing his mom to sell the company to Vendemiaire. Madolyn is hesitant as she wants to remain in control but Chad thinks the deal will be a lifeline to cement her legacy. Venetia interrupts them to inform of an upcoming meeting and Madolyn asks about Marco. She thinks he is a great addition to the company but Chad feels differently. He thinks Marco is not up to the task and Venetia promises to show him the ropes.
Speaking of Marco, he is running late and got into the wrong Uber where he meets Parker. He is quite the hunk who agrees to help Marco and drop him off at the office. Marco is stressed out and confides in Parker that he is having a hard time and Parker tries to encourage him. On his way out of the cab, Marco forgets the prototype samples needed for the meeting.
As he runs late, Britt tries to encourage Ben to ask Marco out but Ben refuses to mix work with pleasure. Finally, Marco gets there and witnesses the disappointing presentation Chad does. He realizes he forgot the new prototype samples and apologizes. Chad fires him on the spot and Madolyn seconds his opinion. Poor Marco heads out and cries his eyes out.
Chad tries to trace the prototypes but it is hard and Madolyn decides maybe they should throw out the project and take new risks. Chad thinks Marco is the reason his mom is feeling motivated to take risks and vows to change her mind.
He is not the only one with a Marco crisis, Venetia also thinks that Marco was meant to be her replacement and she is on the verge of being fired. She tries to hack Madolyn’s computer but thankfully Britt stops her in the nick of time.
At home, Marco throws himself a pity party and eats ice cream with his mom. She shares her experience of not living her dream and asks him not to give up. She advises him to find the prototypes and get his job back. Marco takes her advice and tries to find Parker.
The next morning, he traces him to the gym near the office and gets the prototypes back. In the meantime, Britt tries to get Ben to shoot his shot now that Marco has been fired. Girl, didn’t know that Marco was about to rise from his flop era with a bang. Really, more like with a cute workout outfit and heels to die for. Nonetheless, Marco catwalks his way into the office and interrupts the meeting. He returns the prototypes and says his moving piece about being given a chance to learn and grow. I can’t believe he doesn’t know Cher!
He motivates not only himself but Madolyn and the other employees, excluding Chad. Madolyn decides to give him a second chance and change the new products. She wants to do better and Marco is back in business.
He shows up excited the next day and meets Ben once again in the elevator. He casually asks Ben to hang out. Ben tries to play it low key but he is definitely feeling the vibes. Venetia is also impressed with Marco and decides to help him end his flop era. Madolyn is also happy to have him back and share her few pearls of wisdom.
Later, Chad tries to recruit Venetia in his evil plan to do away with Marco. He wants to ruin Marco and have his mom’s ears again. Of course, Venetia is a good human being and turns him down but Chad makes a tempting point.
The Episode Review
This is only the first episode but it is passing the vibe check and so far it looks to be a vibrant and enjoyable comedy. Marco, is a great protagonist and the series feels like The Devil Wears Prada mixed with a queer rom-com. So far, we have the comedy and the drama, and I hope they will serve it up throughout the show. Fingers crossed that the episodes ahead will keep up the pace and not lose the plot!
