Hibiscus
Get Millie Black Season 1 Episode 2 opens with Hibiscus narrating why she doesn’t believe she’s lost. She is heartbroken after witnessing one of her Gully sisters being beaten to death. She flees the scene and walks to their old house, where Millie currently lives. Hibiscus feels frustrated that Millie seems to keep looking for her brother while she is right in front of her. She feels like Millie is trying to bring Orville back to life. To somehow save him.
Elsewhere, Millie rushes Curtis to the hospital, but the nurse refuses to allow Daniel to see Curtis since they are homophobic. While Curtis is in surgery, Millie returns to the station to find Lance interrogating Janet. Janet refuses to say anything, and Millie convinces the Captain she can do better. She and Luke go in, and Millie does her best to gain Janet’s trust. She convinces Luke to tell Janet why Freddie is in trouble. Janet claims she doesn’t know where Freddie is. She thought they were going on a trip.
Millie asks about the clothes Janet boy for a boy. Janet is shaken and hesitant to share the reason. Finally, she claims that she bought the clothes as an errand for a rich family and gives Millie the address. The Sommerville’s lawyer arrives and takes Janet away. The captain cautions Millie to be careful and go home. Millie insists that Janet is hiding something, but the Captain asks her to go check on Curtis and head home.
After checking on Curtis, who is still unconscious. Millie heads home and goes over the case files. Hibiscus arrives hurt and barefoot. Millie gives her first aid and shows her the house. Hibiscus is certain that their dead mother still haunts the house. She tells Millie how she watched their mom die and felt no remorse. Even in her final moments, their mom wanted to get back at Hibiscus and refused to accept her. Millie apologises for believing their mom’s lie. She wants Hibiscus to move back in so they can start healing, but Hibiscus is not ready for that.
The next morning, Millie convinces Hibiscus to rest in the house while she goes to work. However, Hibiscus is unable to rest as her mom’s words keep playing in her mind. Every part of the house reminds her of the trauma she suffered at their mom’s hands. She leaves to have some drinks at the restaurant that Millie always visits. The owner calls Millie to inform her.
On the other hand, Millie hurts Daniel when she fails to visit Curtis in the hospital. Instead, Millie visits the school and learns that Janet mentored a few kids for a programme called Daybreak. Millie then visits the programme and learns one of the boys got a sponsorship and visits the boy’s parents. The parents express their pride in their son, Romeo. They explain that a woman named Maxwell came over to tell them about the sponsorship and prepared everything Romeo needed to transfer to the new school Sunrise. Millie finds it strange that Maxwell asked the parents to give Romeo a few weeks to settle down before visiting the school.
During lunch, Millie drops by the restaurant to check on Hibiscus. Hibiscus found the offers that Millie has been turning down. She advises Millie to sell the house. While there, Millie receives a call that someone killed the man who shot Curtis. Millie also gets another call, informing her that there is no school known as Sunrise. She calls Romeo’s parents back and leaves a voicemail, asking for more information on Maxwell.
Millie rushes to the scene and finds Lance and Luke. Lance informs her that the man is part of a new gang, Bombers, currently recruiting gunmen. She confronts Luke and demands to know why Freddie is their witness. She realises that Luke offered Freddie immunity. This means that Freddie will get away with all his crimes against children. Millie argues no white criminal is more important than the lives of Black children. In return, Luke brings up Victor, claiming Millie played a role in his death. Millie is surprised and calls an old acquaintance to look into Luke’s cases.
Later, Millie gets a video message from Romeo’s parents. She is shocked to see that Maxwell is none other than Janet, in a wig and a professional outfit. It dawns on her that Freddie had Janet help him kidnap Romeo. Janet is part of Freddie’s human trafficking gang. She takes the evidence to her boss. Thankfully, her boss agrees to let Millie investigate further, but insists she plays nice with Scotland Yard.
Of course, Luke denies that Scotland Yard knew anything about the missing kid. He was supposed to pick Freddie up after he reached out to them and offered information about a gang called Sanguis Meridian. Millie asks for permission to get a warrant for Janet. She and Luke drive to the Somerville’s house and find Janet missing and everyone else dead. Millie sneakily takes Leddick Sommerville’s phone, hoping to find answers.
Later that night, she runs late, picking Hibiscus up from the restaurant. They head home, and a fight ensues after Hibiscus insists the house is haunted. She wants Millie to sell the house. Millie is stuck in the old days when they used to dream, but Hibiscus points out she is haunted by their mother too. Millie insists she came back to save Hibiscus.
Once again, Hibiscus reminds her that she needs no saving. Millie loses her cool and starts breaking the utensils. The fight escalates, and Hibiscus pushes her against the mirror. After getting up, Millie agrees to sell the house. In the meantime, Hibiscus worries that she never realised how lonely and haunted Millie is. She is sad that Millie doesn’t see her.
The following morning, Millie visits Curtis, who is finally awake. He is hurt that she visited to get his help to get into Leddick’s phone. Still, he understands why and agrees to help. They need to find Freddie and Janet before they hurt Romeo. Curtis gets into the phone and finds pictures of Romeo. She realises that Leddick was in Romeo’s abduction, too.
The Episode Review
This episode heavily touches on the racism that Jamaicans suffer. Millie thinks that Freddie is getting a better deal from Scotland Yard because he is white. We can’t blame her. Luke has not shown any particular concern for Romeo or Janet.
All he cares about is getting Freddie. Sadly, that means that Freddie will walk scott-free after years of abusing black children and his dad using his influence to cover his crimes up. Learning that Leddick is involved in Romeo’s abduction is a game changer, but the man is dead, so Millie won’t be getting any answers from him. I wonder who killed the Sommerville family. Was it Janet or the men after Freddie? Either way, we need Janet to find out more. The biggest questions we have right now are where is Romeo and what are they planning to do with him?
The confrontation between Millie and Hibiscus shows us that they are both haunted by their mother for different reasons. Millie is overwhelmed with guilt because she believed her mom when she said Orville was dead. The homophobic words and the beatings that came with living with her mom traumatised Hibiscus. She is hoping that Millie will accept her as she is now. It would be better if the two could sell the house and start afresh. The house holds too many hurtful memories for the sisters. I may be biased, but I think asking Hibiscus to relive her trauma daily by living in that house is unfair.
