Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End – Season 1 Episode 24 Recap & Review

Perfect Replicas

Episode 24 of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End begins with Genau speaking with someone about Spiegel, the dungeon lord. Genau says Spiegel is responsible for creating perfect replicas of those who enter his dungeon. These replicas can imitate a person’s mana, abilities, and skills, according to Genau.

Someone asks Genau why Sense would craft a test like this. Genau says this test requires proper coordination and analysis. He feels since Sense is a pacifist, this is the type of test she’d want people to tackle. We cut to Denken and the others struggling to fight the Frieren replica. Then, we shift to Ubel and Land.

Ubel asks Land for input regarding her replica nearby. Additionally, we learn how Ubel’s replica stole Land’s golem battle and why it’s fearful of Ubel’s Sorganeil spell. Realizing Land’s severely injured, but asks him if he’s the real Land and not one of his clones. Land gives Ubel a vague response. Next, Ubel offers Land her bottle but Land refuses Ubel’s gesture.

Ubel tells Land to wait and promises that she’ll retrieve his golem from her replica. Ubel and her replica fight. They’re evenly matched at first, but Ubel’s replica uses Sorganeil on Ubel, which immobilizes her. Ubel calls out to Land and her replica turns around. This allows Ubel to strike at her replica and shatter it.

Ubel notices the replica dropped the bottle. She grabs it and realizes it’s fake. Ubel wanders over to the Land from earlier and notices this Land’s fading. The Land who stood behind the Ubel replica, who happens to be the real one, asks Ubel why she rushed into combat even though she had a hunch the injured Land was a clone.

Ubel tells Land she knew he’d come for her. Also, Ubel knows Land wouldn’t want to have someone die because of him. So, she crafted a scenario that’d make Land feel guilty about her potential demise. Ubel tells Land it may take her a while to empathize with him. Elsewhere, Frieren and her allies stumble upon an area.

Frieren feels there’s a hidden room behind the wall that has a grimoire in it. Frieren tampers with the wall briefly, resulting in an entrance forming. Frieren and the others enter the room. They discover an ancient mural that depicts the Unified Dynasty Era. Frieren and her allies meet Denken’s group.

Denken informs them about the being who is prohibiting them from traversing the room behind them. Frieren peaks in the room and realizes it’s a replica of herself. Frieren and Denken’s group discuss ways they can defeat Frieren’s replica. Richter believes they should try using restraint or hypnosis magic.

Frieren says she’s resistant to both, but Denken entices his teammate Methode to use her restraint magic on Frieren. Methode performs the gesture and is surprised by Frieren’s resistance to her restraint and hypnosis. Despite Frieren’s resistance to Methode’s hypnosis magic, Methode believes a hypnosis specialist and participant named Edel could be of us to them.

Meanwhile, we cut to Edel’s group dealing with a Sense replica. After discussing things with Dunste and Blei, Edel feels they should give up. Blei asks Edel if her hypnosis magic could work on Sense’s replica. Edel says she could make the Sense replica kneel to them with it, but that’s about it.

She says if the Sense replica has a mind of its own, it’ll take her 15 seconds to pull this stunt off. Edel and her allies confront the Sense replica. Dunste and Blei support Edel during the battle. Edel tries using her hypnosis magic on the replica, but the replica strikes her. Edel realizes the replicas don’t have minds, they’re only acting like they have one.

Edel breaks her golem bottle and tells Blei and Dunste to find another group to flock to. After a brief montage showing everyone else’s dungeon exploring progress, we cut to Frieren and Denken’s group again. Frieren believes the replicas don’t have minds, so their best bet is to use brute force to conquer her replica.

We cut to Wirbel and his group combatting their replicas. Wirbel contemplates their situation briefly and has a hunch he knows his group can triumph over their replicas. We shift back to Frieren and Denken’s group. Fern opens up and says she knows how to kill Frieren’s replica. Frieren finds Fern’s remarks fascinating.

The episode closes with Frieren suggesting they develop a strategy around Fern’s battle with the replica.

The Episode Review

Fortunately, Denken and his allies didn’t get decimated by Frieren’s replica. It would’ve been a bummer seeing them get eliminated by this copycat, so knowing that they’ll be sticking around a little longer is great to know. Moreover, fans will be more excited by the prospect of having Fern be the one to defeat Frieren’s copy.

Not only would it be a great callback to Sense’s comments she made about Fern in episode 23, but if there’s one person who knows Frieren well enough to defeat her, it’s Fern. Having said that, we’re likely in for a magic battle of a lifetime in the upcoming weeks. Hopefully, Frieren and the others can develop a wonderful strategy that’ll assist Fern in her battle with the Frieren copycat.

Unlike Denken, it’s unfortunate Edel got eliminated so soon. Hopefully, we’ll get something from her character in another season as it’d be great to learn more about her. Other than that, this was another phenomenal display from Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End. While some may not like the whole tournament arc we’re in currently, others will find this arc exciting and mesmerizing. I’m hopeful this season will wrap up on a high note.
