Flex X Cop is a South Korean police procedural and crime investigation drama about a third-generation wealthy Chaebol heir, Jin I-soo. I-soo is believed to be immature, rash, and playful, and he does not take anything related to his father’s company seriously. He likes to spend time and money playing elaborate renditions of video games in real life. That is, until one day he gets involved in a case that changes his life.
I-soo crosses paths with a highly-skilled, cold, and dedicated detective, Lee Gang-hyun, who arrests him when she misunderstands his involvement with the suspect. However, the arrest backfires since I-soo is not in the wrong. To save his father’s image, who is running for mayor (and for the reputation of the police for that matter), I-soo is forced to work as a detective under Gang-hyun’s guidance.
I-soo joins Violent Crimes Team 1 and uses his influence and wealth as a chaebol heir to solve murder cases with Gang-hyun, Kyung-jin, and Jun-young.
The premise of Flex X Cop is nothing new since there are so many police procedurals out there, but what makes it unique is the thoughtful and well-crafted storyline that adds the theme of found family versus biological family.
You see, I-soo never had genuine friends and was not on good terms with his father. However, after joining Team 1, although the relationship with his team members has a rough start, it grows into something magical, and you’ll find yourself captivated by their distinct dynamics and charming chemistry.
The script is organised meticulously such that even when the story starts to change direction towards the final episodes, it is impossible to get frustrated by the writing because the execution of the narrative is impressive. The story’s development and pacing are magnificent. They start by handling random cases and then build on the mystery, suspense, and heartbreak as the cases start touching closer to home.
It also helps that the show sports outstanding characters who all have crackling chemistry with each other. Lee Gang-hyun, the leader of Violent Crimes Team 1, is a cold-hearted, determined, and highly skilled detective. His approach to cases is strict, logical, and straightforward. Park Jun-young’s personality is similar to Gang-hyun’s because he is straightforward, strict, and emphasises logic and handling cases by the book.
On the other hand, Jin I-soo and Choi Kyung-jin are similar but different from the former. Jin I-soo is playful and daring, and he does not believe in things like search warrants. I-soo perfectly embodies the spoiled, fun-loving, and trouble-making rich son character, adding a layer of humour and comedy to the show. His performance stands out, mainly due to his innate ability to act relaxed and unbothered on the outside while still showing a hint of extreme sadness and heartbreak.
Similarly, Kyung-jin is playful, adores Jin I-soo, and is skilled in computer technology. The four members join forces, using their contrasting methods to unravel mysteries and solve homicide cases.
The support characters in this drama are exceptional, especially the list of fantastic guest stars whenever a new case occurs. These support characters enriched the episodes with outstanding performances and charm, making each episode fast-paced, engaging, and entertaining, leaving viewers clamouring for more.
Flex X Cop stands out among investigative crime dramas due to the fantastic performances of the characters and captures the viewers’ attention with stunning visuals, excellent writing, execution, and production. One thing I liked most about the drama is that it does not dwell on the romance in this season, leaving more room for viewers to enjoy the stellar action sequences, engaging investigations, and the wholesome chemistry among the characters.
