Mythril Golem (Boss Fight) |
Welcome to the Mythril Mine, a big ol’ dungeon to traverse through. From your starting position, follow Barrett along the passageway as he talks about Shinra and Mythril. There’s a bench and a vending machine just up ahead and it’s highly advised that you use these before pressing on. There are also a few different materials here too so go ahead and grab those on the way.
Just up ahead are a bunch of robed figures, who slip down deeper into the caves. Red XIII and Barrett will leave the party, locking you with Tifa and Aerith for the time being.
Where They Lead
Proceed forward, and defeat the new Crawler enemies. They’re quite easy to beat, and from their location go up the broken stairs to the right and through the gap in the wall. On the other side, curl around and be sure to pick up 1x AP Up Materia next to the ladder
Descend down the ladder, defeat the Crystalline Crab and Crawler then open the Pink Chest which holds 1x Pair of Sylph Gloves. Just right of the chest is another ladder to go down. Go to the far end and open the chest there to reveal 1x Bottle of Ether.
Opposite to this is a large cave entrance with a minecart track. Follow this all the way along and then veer off to the right (pictured below) to tackle the ogre.
These guys have a bit more health compared to the other enemies in this area, but they’re weak to fire so use that to your advantage. They use a move called Brutish Tremor, where they launch in the air and smash down at your location, but if you switch between Tifa and Cloud for physical attacks, you’ll stagger it quite quickly.
Follow the path around as it joins back up with the minecart track and take a left when you find a yellow chest. Inside happens to be 5x Chunks of Iron Ore. There’s also a flying Archdragon here but if you use your evade/attack move with Cloud, or hit it with Wind (which it’s weak to) you’ll be able to get an edge.
Eventually you’l reach a minecart you’ll need to pull backwards, Hold L2 until you can safely slip through and then do just that.
Ticket Out Of Here
When the mine opens up to a larger area, Aerith will encourage you all to “go see”. After she says this, take a right rather than a left and grab the materials at the end of the pathway. Then, circle back and go left. Hop over the bridge and defeat the enemies in this section. There’s a yellow chest here too which holds 3x Hi-Potions.
In order to ascend up the broken ladder blocking the path, go into the mineshaft just beyond the chest and grab the Minecart. Hold L2 to push it out along the track until it’s directly under the broken ladder.
Hop up and head over the elevated platform. Instead of going up the sloped platform, if you go left and drop down, you’ll be able to grab some materials. If you circle around the linear path, there are some enemies and more material to grab. Outside the broken metal room, climb up the ladder and there will be 2 ogres to contend with and another ladder ladder leading higher out the mine.
The circular path will eventually lead to an area sporting a Vending Machine and a Bench. Make sure you rest up here as there is a boss incoming. With that in mind, you want to make sure you have your lightning and wind Materia equipped.
Continue along the linear pathway and you’ll overhear the Turks talking. Press up against the tree roots and a cutscene will trigger.
Boss Fight – Elena & Rude |
||
Compared to Chapter 2’s boss, this one’s actually not too difficult. Both Rude and Elena can be staggered quite easily, so be sure to use your Assess materia to find their weaknesses. Rude is weak to Wind and Elena weak to lightning. Aerith is best used as a healer and magic damage dealer, alternating between using Wind and Lightning magic, and healing up the party. Rude will use Triple Shockwave, which will see sparks of lightning protrude across the arena, and a standard Shockwave, which just sees one blast across the arena. As for Elena, she’ll use more melee strikes rather than magic. As Rude has more HP, it’s a good idea to target Elena and attack her first, but when she’s almost Staggered, she’ll team up with Rude and they’ll use their own Synergy attacks. Elena’s big move is Petite Powerhouse and it’ll deal a good chunk of damage. Try to block this when it arrives and be sure to use Aerith to heal up after. Take Elena out first and be sure to use her weakness to your advantage. When Elena goes down, Stagger Rude and be sure to use your Unique Abilities. With a 3-on-1 advantage it should be pretty easy to do and he’ll stagger quite quickly, especially if you use Wind. Elena gives 700 EXP, 10 AP and 700 Gil when she’s defeated. Rude meanwhile, will drop 1400 Gil and 700 Exp. |
Escape The Depths
After the cutscene, you’ll now be controlling Barret. Barret is unique in that he can actually destroy shards of crystals with a blast of Square. You can also quite easily get a First Strike bonus against enemies too by just peppering bullets in their general location while walking forward!
Just ahead, be sure to use the vending machines and bench to heal up, and be sure to open that pink chest too, which holds 1x Renegade’s Collar.
Continue on the main path and after Red XIII shows the general location you need to travel, he sure to hop up the rock walls and then climb the tree roots (location pictured below).
Be sure to stop halfway up on the small ledge and grab the materials as there’s a fair chunk of them here before ascending all the way up to the top. Just next to the shining blue crystals, you’ll be able to destroy the boulders to clear a passage through to even more material, including emerald, iron ore and more.
Your destination is just on the right from here, with another big boulder to destroy. Get rid of it and ascend up to the very top to reach the Excavation Site.
Continue along the main path, being sure to destroy the mythril shards as you do. There’s also a chest on the left, which holds 5x Beast Bones inside.
So Close Yet So Far
At the end of the chamber you’ll reach a seemingly impassable high platform. Thankfully, there’s a minecart and a switch. First off, approach the minecart and push it all the way to the end of the track. Climb up and open the chest which holds 1x Bulletproof Vest.
Hop back down and push the minecart back to its original spot. Then, approach the switch, hold Triangle to turn the track and then hold L2 to push the cart on the new track to the very end.
Climb up the minecart and continue forward, grabbing materials as you do. Defeat the big ogre and follow the minecart tracks to the end of the path, where you’ll find a massive boulder. Destroy it with your gun and continue forward.
Two-Grand Rig
To solve this next section, take a left after speaking to Cloud and press Square by the ladder to shoot it and drop it down. Climb up and defeat the enemies, being sure to use the bench and vending machine in here.
Next, push the minecart out of the room and follow it along, destroying the big boulder blocking the way by pressing Square. At the end of the track, when the minecart has turned right and been pushed to the far end, let go and approach the switch at the junction.
Hold Triangle to move the track over and return to the minecart, obviously grabbing all the material along the way. At the far end, Barret will push the minecart down and trigger a cutscene.
Exit
Now to leave; retrace your steps and return to the bench and vending machine. Aerith will open the gate and you’ll be able to grab 1x Lightning Materia that’s in here just to the left. Make sure you equip this to Barret before you press on, especially if he doesn’t have any magic on him. In fact, make sure both Red and Barrett are equipped with any Materia you have lying around, especially offensive magic.
Grab the material all the way down until you reach the Mythril Cavern.
Boss Fight – Mythril Golem |
||
Phase 1Mythril Golem is an intriguing boss because it’s strong to Physical attacks but it’s weak to Lightning. There are also two strategic points to attack – the bulk of Golem and its head. Be sure to Lock On to its head and aim there from afar. You can choose to keep a distance and keep blasting it with Barret and Red’s melee strikes but a much more effective strategy is to use your offensive magic specifically against the head. Destroying the Head will Pressure Golem, allowing him to quickly reach a Staggered state if you pummel it with physical attacks. At this point, use your Unique Abilities like Focused Shot, along with offensive magic – specifically Lightning and Ice if you have them equipped. Keep switching between the two characters as well whilst casting Magic. Now, the Golem will regenerate its head quite quickly after being staggered and begin using more offensive moves. Watch out for Mythril Mallet, which will see it swing down and smash the ground with its arm. There’s also Stalagmite Skewer to watch out for, and keep a distance when it winds this attack up. It’ll smash the ground with a blast of magic that will deal a lot of damage. Save all your Limits and Summons for when Mythril Golem is staggered, and be prepared for a long fight here. Phase 2At around 50% health or so, Mythril Golem will add a spike top its right arm, and also crystallize its spine. It’s a lot stronger in this phase so watch out. There’s also a new point to attack rather than the head – the Right Arm or Spine. Lock On and hit that weak point, and watch out for Leaping Strike which will see it use a big, well, leaping strike. There are a few different forms in this phase, and Mythril Golem’s weak point will switch after every Stagger. Eventually it’ll go down. Defeating the Golem will net you 50 Party Exp, 5 SP for both Red XIII and Barrett, along with 938 EXP, 10 AP and 750 Gil. |
With the Golem defeated, head on through the newly created corridor. When you enter the metal chamber, be sure to take a right around to open the chest in the far corner (pictured below)
Open the chest to find 1x Chunk of Mythril Ore and continue circling around this pathway and hop up on the left to reunite with your comrades.
Tracking the Robes
Controlling Cloud again, proceed forward defeating enemies and grabbing resources on this linear pathway. You’ll eventually emerge outside, and a cutscene will trigger, bringing an end to this chapter.
