Family Matters – K-drama Episode 3 Recap & Review

Cat Claw

Episode 3 of Family Matters starts with a flashback to the night that Young-soo and her family ran away from the Training centre. Young-soo went back to save Gang-sung and got cornered in Ahn So-jin’s office. The latter threatened to kill Young-soo. In the end, Young-soo used her powers on Ahn So-jin, but Gang-sun advised her not to kill the woman. As they left, Ahn So-jin vowed to hunt and kill them in the future.

Presently, we circle back to Young-soo asking Gang-sung why he freed Ho-chul. Grandpa insists that he did it to bring the family together since he knew from the beginning there was a body in the trunk. He believes that dealing with a crisis will bring the family closer together. However, Chul-hee and Young-soo are not sure that is a good idea. If anything, they believe it will only put the kids in danger.

At school, Ji-woo takes over and announces that she and Ji-hoon will help Kyu-tae victims. She clarifies there will be no bullying moving forward and refuses to work for Jae-goon. Later at dinner, Young-soo keeps her promise and gifts Ji-hoon a laptop. It turns out that Ji-hoon has three laptops hidden away. After dinner, he works on deleting the videos from Jae-gon’s website and stumbles on the real boss running the show. In an unsurprising twist, it turns out that No-won is the big boss. He has been taking videos of women and even using them as sex slaves. One of the victims is his secretary, who he keeps in line by threatening her with her dad.

In the meantime, Ho-chul digs up more information on Kyu-tae and realises he is the son of Deacon Joe. He calls Joe and tells him about Young-soo’s family. He also sends the video he secretly took to Deacon Joe. The deacon decides to get revenge since Kyu-tae is still in bad condition. The doctor claims he is suffering from phantom pain and has no cure.

On the other hand, Detective Jung-hwan and his partner, Joong-man, find a clue that leads them to the vet shop. Simultaneously, No-won’s secretary brings a cat to the vet shop for treatment. Chul-hee senses she is in pain but is unable to help her. On the other side of the shop, Young-soo receives a call from Ho-chul, informing her that Deacon Joe is on his way. Young-soo doesn’t seem scared, but she is worried about the kids.

The police arrive at the vet shop first, and Gang-chul acts like he is giving them a clue. He leads them to a local bar that Deacon Joe is currently looking to buy. The owner is hesitant to sell the bar, so Deacon Joe and his gang visit him and torture him. While they are in the middle of it, the police arrive to ask questions. Deacon Joe quickly hides the owner and tells Jung-hwan that he just bought the bar. The police look around but don’t find anything suspicious. However, Jung-hwan notices the bracelet on Deacon Joe’s hand and is shocked to learn it is from the church.

As the day goes by, Ji-hoon confronts Jae-gon about No-won. In the meantime, No-won continues terrorising his dad’s secretary. At the end of the day, Young-soo gets anxious as she waits for the kids to call. Ji-hoon calls to inform her that they are okay and that No-won needs to be handled.

No-won’s secretary shows up again, and this time Chul-hee and Young-soo convince her to trust them. The young lady details the abuse she is facing at No-won’s hand. He keeps calling her, asking to meet at a hotel. She is terrified to go.

A few minutes later, Young-soo calls Ji-hoon after Ji-woo arrives alone from school. Unfortunately, Deacon Joe picks up the call. He kidnapped Ji-hoon and his girlfriend on their way home. He thought Min-jung was Ji-woo, and now he wants Ji-woo to bring her parents. Young-soo and Chul-hee are pissed and decide to divide and conquer. Young-soo orders Ji-woo to remain home while Chul-hee saves Min-jung and Ji-hoon. She offers to help No-won’s secretary and head to the hotel on her behalf.

No-won is shocked when he sees Young-soo but also excited, thinking he has a new victim. Young-soo gives him a knock-out blow and invites the secretary and her dad into the room.

Meanwhile, Chul-hee goes to save Ji-hoon, and Young-soo reminds him on the phone that he can’t kill anyone. Ji-hoon asks Min-jung to close her eyes and let their dad save them. The episode ends with Chul-hee removing his glasses, ready to give Deacon Joe and his men a taste of his wrath.

The Episode Review

Once again, Family Matters delivers a good episode with intricate twists and builds the viewers’ anticipation of the next episode. For now, we don’t know the powers of anyone else except Young-soo. I am curious to see Chul-hee’s powers. Maybe Grandpa was right: the crisis has brought the family together.

However, it has also endangered the kids. Young-soo and Chul-hee wanted the kids to have a normal childhood and tried their best. Unfortunately, they can’t protect the kids from the twisted world forever. It would also be better for the kids to get stronger. Ahn So-jin is probably still looking for them. It feels like Young-soo regrets listening to Gang-chul and not killing So-jin when she had a chance.

It is interesting to see how messy and dark a little town can get just because of a few rotten people. Deacon Joe, Sister Oh, and No-won have been secretly terrorising people while acting like loyal members of the church.

Speaking of the church, we can’t help but wonder if Father Yoon is not as innocent as he parades himself. Jung-hwan and Yoong-man have their hands full with the serial killer case, but I have a feeling that Jung-hwan is suspicious of Young-soo’s family. In all these, we still don’t know how Ho-chul fits.

If he is not the serial killer, why is he intent on acting like he is? Does he know the serial killer? Why did he kill that young woman? It wouldn’t be surprising if he killed her to get attention from the real serial killer.
