Family Guy season 21 appeared to be in full swing since the get-go. The viewers are offered a glimpse into the lives of Griffins and other characters of Quahog through a variety of special episodes. Meg finds her soulmate in Russia, Stewie goes missing in France, Lois becomes a delivery woman only to exact vengeance, and many more instances of such interesting stories. The thrust of the makers seemed to be pointed on freshness, and they pulled it off pretty well. However, despite the variety and uniqueness of the plots, the 20-episode ride was both sweet and sour.
While the majority of the episodes impressed viewers, a few episodes such as episode 11 “Love Story Guy” lacked story strength and flavour. Even so, the signs of a nice storytelling effort were evident even in the bad ones.
And, as usual, embedded into several episodes are subtle social commentaries – touching upon several important topics such as the social cost of war and regrets of a failed relationship. Episode 15, “Adoptation”, where Carter adopts a girl to compensate for not being there for Lois is a good example of that. Many episodes saw new characters, and some of them had side characters at the centre of the plot which was refreshing to see.
The animation and voice acting are right on the point. There are countless instances in season 21 where voice actors turned a piece of straight dialogue into something fun to hear (doing a good job as always). In addition, there have been songs too. Our favourite is Stewie’s clad-in-swag version of Boombastic in episode 8, “Get Stewie”.
With several stories, the show continued some of its long-standing plot lines. For example, Brian’s search for love ended up in smoke one more time in episode nine, “Carny Knowledge” and the age-old rivalry between Stewie and Doug saw an upgrade in episode 10, “The Candidate”.
Compared to previous seasons, season 21 of Family Guy is powered by a lot more imagination, creativity, and freshness. There have been weak episodes, no doubt, but the show’s potential that we felt had vanished seems to be reinvigorated. We are more hopeful about the upcoming seasons than we were about season 21.
