Episode 5
Episode 5 of Family By Choice starts with a frosty atmosphere and a stressful dinner. Dae-wook is shocked to learn that Jung-hee showed up and caused a fight between San-ha and Hae-joon. The two boys end up trying to one-up each other but Dae-wook calls them out for having terrible table manners. Both San-ha and Hae-joon get up without finishing their food and Jung-jae scolds Dae-wook for making the kids leave.
A week later, Joo-won tells Dal how stressful dinners were at home due to the fight between San-ha and Hae-joon. Dal asks Joo-won to give the boys some time to resolve their animosity. Joo-won tells Dal that she is going to make sure Hae-joon and San-ha reconcile by the former’s birthday. Hae-joon’s aunt also often comes to see him during his birthdays.
Joon-ho checks up on Joo-won and asks her to go on a date with him. This gives Joo-won an idea and she decides to call Hae-joon and San-ha on the bike date with her. When both boys refuse, San-ha and Hae-joon fall into Joo-won’s trap. Joo-won asks Dal to join them, hoping to boost their friendship.
That Sunday, Dal lies to her mother about going to her academy. She instead ends up on a bike date with Hae-joon and San-ha. Joo-won realises that half her school have joined the date event. The boys are shocked when Joon-ho tries to ride the bike with Joo-won.
When Dal doesn’t arrive, the four decide to just take the bike. Dal somehow makes it late to the park where she runs into a group of boys. She tries to reach Joo-won, who is still on the bike ride. Hae-joon apologises to San-ha for punching him but San-ha asks Hae-joon to apologise for anything that happened before that. The two fight all the more which makes Joo-won upset.
Joo-won rides faster and eventually gets off to look for Dal. She notices Dal being harassed by the group of boys and tries to save her, despite being exhausted from riding. Joo-won passes out from exhaustion and the boys run to bring her some water.
Hae-joon and San-ha are shocked to see Joo-won in that state. The two decide that the boys have done something to Joo-won and beat them up. San-ha tries to save Hae-joon, as the duo attacks the boys. That night, the group end up at the police station. At the restaurant, Jung-jae asks Dae-wook if they should cut down on expenses to buy San-ha and Hae-joon a second-hand car before they go to college.
Dae-wook gets a call from the station that the kids have been arrested for causing a fight, and rushes there. Meanwhile, San-ha apologises to the boys for beating them up without knowing the whole truth. Dae-wook asks the cops to punish San-ha and Hae-joon severely but the boys who were beaten up decide to go easy on them.
Outside, Joo-won tries to explain how the boys tried to help her. Dae-wook decides to drop Dal on the way home. Dal’s mother, who was worried for her, finds Dal outside the academy and scolds her for ignoring her calls.
Dal lies to her mother and claims that she was studying with Joo-won’s older brother, San-ha, who was helping her prepare for the mock upcoming exam. The boys put Joo-won in bed and pretend to make up in front of her. Outside her room, both Hae-joon and San-ha have another argument and decide to keep up their act in front of Joo-won the following day on their walk to school.
Joo-won tells Dal how she’s relieved that San-ha and Hae-joon are back to normal. That day, a rumour spreads around school about Dal having feelings for Hae-joon. Hui-ju confronts Hae-joon about the same and asks if he likes Dal. Hae-joon tries to dismiss Hui-ju and claims that Dal is like a sister to him because she’s friends with Joo-won.
Joo-won drags Dal to confess her feelings for Hae-joon but Dal overhears and is shattered. Joo-won kicks Hae-joon and tries to console Dal. In class, Dal tells her friends that she is not interested in dating Hae-joon to kill the rumour.
After school, Joo-won and San-ha go to a mall for Hae-joon’s birthday and Joo-won tells him about Dal’s feelings being shattered. San-ha tells Joo-won that she should keep out of their business. The two buy some basketball shoes for Hae-joon and San-ha decides to buy Joo-won a pair as well.
The cashier assumes the two to be a couple and offers them a discount. San-ha tries to correct her but Joo-won stops him and pretends to be his girlfriend to get the discount. Jung-hee and So-hee are at a restaurant at the same mall when the latter insists on meeting San-ha. Jung-hee goes to the restroom when So-hee spots San-ha and Jo-woon. She runs out and chases after San-ha, eventually tripping and hurting herself.
San-ha tries to check up on the little girl. Jung-hee panics and looks for So-hee, eventually finding her with San-ha. Jung-hee comments that people get hurt when San-ha is involved, but this upsets Joo-won. She gets upset with Jung-hee and claims that good things happen when San-ha is involved. The two are on their way back home when Joo-won stops to listen to a man singing on the street.
San-ha recalls how Joo-won has been there for him since they were kids and looks at her affectionately. The next day, Hae-joon is setting the table for his birthday dinner where his aunt, Yi-hyun, will be joining them. Jung-jae asks Joo-won to wake San-ha up. She goes to San-ha’s room when he is getting dressed.
San-ha kicks Joo-won out and asks her to start knocking so they don’t invade each other’s privacy. He notices the look on Joo-won’s face and wonders what is wrong. Joo-won tries to act like everything is okay when his aunt is around. San-ha tells Joo-won that she should refrain from saying anything to Aunt Yi-hyun.
Once she arrives, Hae-joon tells his aunt that he is doing his best and promises to be good. Yi-hyun tells Hae-joon that he should consider going to the USA with his biological dad as they already owe so much to Jung-jae. Unfortunately, Jung-jae overhears and gets upset.
That evening, Hae-joon cuts his cake while San-ha and Joo-won give him his present. Dae-wook jokes about how people usually run away when they are given shoes as a present. Yi-hyun claims that Hae-joon can’t do that because he has to pay Jung-jae back for raising him. This comment sours everyone’s mood and Jung-jae ends up drunk.
Jung-jae tells Yi-hyun how Hae-joon tried to help him out in any way that he can and breaks down. Yi-hyun apologises for causing a scene while Hae-joon and Joo-won put Jung-jae to bed. Outside, San-ha starts cleaning the table when Yi-hyun tries to stop him. She tells San-ha that he is not the same as Hae-joon because his father is paying Jung-jae.
San-ha stands up for Hae-joon which makes Joo-won proud. Hae-joon is touched as well and he walks Yi-hyun to get a taxi. Yi-hyun apologises to Hae-joon and asks him to forget his mother and move on. She states that Jung-jae has been the parent to him that his mother could never be.
That night, Hae-joon keeps some hangover medicine in Jung-jae’s room and apologises to Jung-jae for his aunt. He then goes to the rooftop, where Joo-won and San-ha are waiting for him. Hae-joon thanks San-ha and the two finally make up for good. The next morning, Seo-hyun shows at the restaurant to meet Jung-jae and the episode comes to an end.
The Episode Review
The first half of this episode was so funny but things got a little heavy by the end. Every episode of this gets me emotional and this is what makes Family By Choice so popular right now. Though this is a remake of the original Chinese drama, Go Ahead, it seems like the approach this Korean drama is taking is more emotional and different. The relationship between San-ha, Joo-won and Hae-joon is really fun and I hope it stays the same.
I like how Jung-jae stood up to Yi-hyun, who was more or less projecting her guilt on Hae-joon. While it was not her duty to care for Hae-joon when Seo-hyun had left, she still is related to Hae-joon by blood. Since Jung-jae had taken away that responsibility from her without a word, she feels guilty. I wish the elders sorted this issue out on their own without making Hae-joon feel like he was causing unnecessary trouble.
It is nice to see that San-ha and Hae-joon finally made up but with Seo-hyun returning, I am worried that he will be taken away from the family and it is something that I will hope never happens.
