If you’re looking for a K-drama that perfectly balances comedy, action and thrills, Family: The Unbreakable Bond may just be what you’ve been looking for. This show offers an exciting narrative that will leave viewers on the edge of their seats with suspense while laughing their heads off due to the comedy it offers.
The storyline of this show is complicated yet also rather simple. We follow the life of Kwon Do-Hoon, an NIS secret service agent who takes out dangerous criminals. His wife, Kang Yoo-Ra, daughter Kwon Min-Seo, father Kwon Woong-So, brother Kwon Ji-Hoon, and sister-in-law and Ji-Hoon’s wife Lee Mi-Rim don’t know that Do-Hoon is a secret service agent. Instead, Do-Hoon leads them to believe he works in a garden trading company.
By episode 2, Kwon Do-Hoon gets wrapped up in a case involving a long-time-running organization, MGD Union, that turns criminal. One particular event causes him to be ordered not to be involved in this case, but Do-Hoon conducts investigations on the MGD anyway. What he doesn’t know is that his wife Yoo-Ra has been keeping a secret about being connected to the MGD.
While the action around Do-Hoon investigating the MGD unfolds, Do-Hoon and his family go about their day-to-day activities, offering the comedy we never knew we needed in a thriller like this. I wouldn’t be doing this series any justice if I give away too much information but Family: The Unbreakable Bond has its fair share of ups and downs.
For starters, the writers have done an excellent job connecting most of the characters to the main storyline; the uncovering of the MGD. We gradually see how most of the characters are connected to the MGD in one way or another.
The show’s comedic concept also balances action in the show well too, so we get a good laugh while eagerly following the action in the series.
However, it would gave been nice if the show had completed the storyline in the first episode. Kwon Do-Hoon investigates a criminal at the end of the 1st episode but we don’t get to see a resolution to it as episode 2 begins with a completely different storyline. If that wasn’t enough, the concept of Min-Seo’s “love life” is a bit too much, considering she is just a 6-year-old girl.
In the last episode, we don’t get to see the fate of some characters who played a significant role in this series either. In fact, there’s one particular character who we never see despite him talking to some of the characters on the phone. But again, this is a thriller, so a little mystery is good.
The ending has also been a subject of controversy among viewers. While some liked how this season ended, others were a little bit disappointed. This is because the fate of some characters isn’t what many expected.
Generally, the main message in this show is the power of family, which many viewers relate to. We see the main characters, Yoo-Ra and Do-Hoon, do everything in their power to protect their family.
After watching all 12 episodes, this show has everything needed to make a top-notch K-drama, even with its narrative flaws. From action and thriller vibes to comedy and romance, there’s enough here to make for a wholly enjoyable watch.
