The Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives is not fabulous. It’s another carbon copy, trashy reality show fresh off the conveyor belt of clones that does absolutely nothing new or original. The characters aren’t that likable either and to be honest, the only plus with this show comes from the establishing shots of Mumbai and other big cities.

Across 8 slices of formulaic contrived drama, Bollywood Wives dives into the lives of four “fabulous” wives to different Bollywood stars. You’ve got Bhavana Pandey who’s a costume designer and the self-proclaimed “spiritual one” of the group. Seema Khan “just can’t keep calm” and plays up the loud-mouth of the group.

Alongside them is jewelry designer Maheep who “says it as it is” and fellow designer Neelam who’s “more guarded” and level-headed. As one may expect, these four inevitably sit around and gossip for large stretches of the season, getting involved in each other’s business and generally playing up the cameras every chance they get.

The set-up is oh-so-familiar to anyone who’s ever laid eyes on reality TV and all the usual tropes rear their heads here too. To spice things up, various different characters crop up along the way to lend their voice to the group and setting, with lots of dramatic lunches, awkward moments and plenty of glam parties to reinforce that these wives are living the high life.

Unfortunately viewers are unlikely to be living the high life with them. If you’re absolutely desperate to watch something reality-flavoured then this spicy dish will definitely be tasty enough for you but for everyone else, this is more likely to give you stomach cramps instead.

There’s absolutely nothing palatable here that doesn’t feel like it’s been executed far better in other reality shows of its kind. The storylines on offer here are standard fare for this genre and the shouting, drama and gossip eventually becomes tiresome after only a few episodes – let alone 8 of them.

While the show does end with a glamorous celebrity party to top things off, whether you make it that far or not remains to be seen.
