Be the Daddy You Want to See in the World
Episode 7 begins amidst quarrelling between Carrie and Kash. Jen sits in the middle, her head in her hands prepared to face the repercussions of kissing George. The person whose opinion matters the most remains quiet for now. But soon enough, Jizz speaks out in Jen’s defence. She gives him a freebie – translation, “Go have sex with a stranger.”
Although Jizz doesn’t want to do that, he nonetheless ventures outside looking for willing women. Before Jen goes to the Discovery Clinic, Ian visits her. He offers to use her powers – making people feel absolute empathy – to help her with Mary.
But the relationship is in a difficult moment and Jen doesn’t want to extend a hand. She continues the work with George, who apologizes for the previous day’s incident. The duo discovers a secret door behind the walls of Jen’s memories that might be the key to unlocking what’s blocking her powers. The room reveals an expected answer: daddy issues.
Jen refuses to believe Martin is the reason she cannot unlock her powers. To prove George wrong, she decides to “double down on Daddy,” which means spending more time with him. Carrie is more than willing to help Jen, even as she embarks on a journey of self-discovery. The two decide to use the imagined situation of going fishing, something Jen always wanted to do with him.
Martin is confused about being summoned in such short spans. He senses there is something wrong with Jen and tries to act normally to help her through the issues.
During the waiting phase, Jen reveals to him that Mary disapproves of her summoning him. This catches Martin by surprise. He grows concerned after learning that Mary is not in favour of Jen contacting him, subtly agreeing with his ex-wife’s suggestion. He expresses his disappointment and curtails their meetings to just once a week. Jen isn’t happy with how it went…perhaps seeing some reason in George’s suggestion to move on from Martin.
Kash offers to go on a Food Roulette with Carrie, their tradition for years. But she declines the offer, building from her hesitance to spend more time with him. He gathers his vigilante group to rehearse the musical, which is a very tangible project as of now. However, when we see the group testing out their vocals, it becomes clear that they aren’t musically inclined. Moreover, Kash doesn’t have a script yet. And without one, there is no show. As the session extends, his friends become less and less interested in the play.
Carrie feels out of place when she goes to a couple’s pottery class. To get past it, she summons Martin again and they hit it off. Kash and Carrie have a realization at the same time that they made a mistake in ending their relationship. They share a kiss and embrace but quickly realize that neither is getting aroused. After a moment’s introspection, Carrie says that they missed each other as friends and agree to go for Food Roulette.
Jizz misreads a flier for a hog house in his haste of finding a probable sexual partner. He has no inkling of what he is getting into. When he shows up, the manager mistakes him for a “shapeshifter” and puts him on the stage. Jizz attracts boos and criticism from the women in the audience, barring one enthusiastic blonde, Taylor. In a horrifying discovery, Jizz learns that Taylor has the power to control people with the same name after one of the girls from her group passes a “help me” chit to him.
The women are finally freed and run frenetically for their lives. Taylor agrees to be physical with Jizz but it arouses a moral quandary within him. He eventually decides to pass on the opportunity and forgives Jen for cheating on him. Jen is elated but also feels a little guilty. However, the equation is squared when the next-door neighbour angrily hands over a box of kittens to them, saying that Jizz impregnated his cat.
The Episode Review
It is all building up to Jen being beckoned with a decision to move on. I am sure it will be a big moment in the show that will change its complexion. Other than that, Episode 7 isn’t very impressive. Kash and Carrie’s actions only pile on the confusion about what they are going through. The show has been far from articulate in establishing proper storylines for both of them, more so for Carrie than Kash. The actors look desperate for direction in the scene that culminates their shared arcs.
Jizz’s character has been reduced to a naive man with no personality or guts. What the makers want to portray as innocence is more easily understood as cowardice. His arc has suffered even more than Carrie, although it did look like Jizz might be the most surprising character in the first half of Season 2.
Season 2 has been more inconsistent than the first season. Episode 7 is not its brightest moment. Its lack of appeal also takes away some legs from the finale, which is where we are going next.
