Expend4bles Plot Summary
Expend4bles has a lot going on in the last five minutes: Jason Statham’s Lee Christmas plans to risk his life for the mission; a secret villain is revealed; and someone we thought died in the first twenty minutes ends up being alive, and they save the day.
The new installment in the franchise shifts its focus more on Statham’s character. The plot revolves around the team taking on the villain named Rahmat (Iko Uwais) as he plots to blow up a ship with a nuclear bomb, which could set off a massive war and start World War III.
Who is Rahmat, and what happens to him?
Rahmat is the big bad in the film, who manages his own army. We first meet him in the opening of the film, storming a warehouse looking for detonators for the bomb he has built. He’s violent and willing to do anything to get what he needs to get his mission done.
However, in the film’s final fight, he goes toe-to-toe with Lee Christmas and takes an axe to the heart. It does not kill him instantly; as a matter of fact, he vanishes on Christmas after their fight. But it is never stated if he fully dies or not. But since the ship exploded and there was no way off of it at the time, he must be gone… right?
Why did Barney Ross fake his death?
A big shocker at the start of the film is that Barney Ross dies in a plane explosion early on. We even see his burnt corpse in the cockpit. However, the big moment at the end sees us learn that his death was fabricated as he shows up to save the day in a helicopter to level what’s left of the villains on the ship and save Lee Christmas. So if Barney is alive, then whose body was that in the cockpit burned to a crisp?
Well, in the film’s opening scene, there is a bar fight that involves Christmas and Ross. The reason for the fight is that Ross is there to win back his lucky ring after losing a thumb war. It is there that they get into a fight with a character named Jumbo Shrimp.
It turns out that after their victorious fight, Barney Ross stashed Jumbo’s body on the plane. As it was crashing, he parachuted out, leaving Jumbo to die in a fiery plane crash he didn’t ask to be in.
Who is Ocelot?
Ocelot is this secret person that we hear about early in the film, and we know that at some point we will learn about who his true identity is. It just happens that Ocelot is actually Marsh, the CIA agent played by Andy Garcia. Marsh and Ross were teamed up twenty-five years earlier on a mission that got Ross’ men all killed.
It turns out that Marsh hired The Expendables for this mission so he could start World War III, make a lot of money off of it, and blame the team for starting it. But of course, that plan backfires upon Ross’ return in the film’s final moments.
Will there be an Expendables 5?
There is no real indication of a fifth installment in the franchise, but that’s not to say the door is not left open. With Barney Ross still around, that leaves room for him to be kind of an old mentor and for Lee Christmas to take the reins as the group leader now.
The film has no clear indication of another installment, as it ends like some of the others do; in a bar with the group hanging out. But if this fourth film does well, it most likely could assist in bringing in another mission for the group.
