Episode 3
Episode 3 of English Teacher begins with Evan bumping into Harry at his gym. In the locker room, Evan ends up seeing Harry naked. Back at school, Evan tells Gwen that Harry did it on purpose because he wants to hit on Evan. Gwen isn’t so sure about that.
While Principal Grant is giving out duties to the teachers, he pairs Evan and Harry together to plan the homecoming dance. Evan tries to convince him to unpair them but Grant tells him to stop creating drama.
In class, a student named Kayla tells Evan that she’s diagnosed herself with asymptomatic Tourette’s syndrome. Evan is forced to be respectful about this fake disease and later rants to Markie, who offers to come by and help.
Evan and Harry then go to dinner to plan the dance but Evan behaves oddly since he doesn’t want to send the wrong signal to Harry. They end up meeting Malcolm and Evan uses this as an excuse to leave early. Later, Evan and Malcolm are naked in bed together but they’re talking about Harry. Malcolm doesn’t believe that Harry’s into Evan.
Back in class, Kayla’s disease has now been renamed Kayla Syndrome. Markie sits in on Evan’s class and later tells Evan that he’s figured it out. This is all a power play for popularity in between the friends, Kayla and Chelsea. Since Chelsea was very popular, Kayla came up with this disease to steal the limelight. But in showing overt concern and care for her friend, Chelsea is taking it back.
The homecoming dance arrives. Gwen once again tries to tell Evan that he’s reading too much into Harry’s behaviour. Harry then asks to speak with Evan so they go outside the hall. Harry calls out Evan’s odd behaviour and Evan’s emotions come spilling out.
He goes down a spiral about how they couldn’t hook up because it would lead to them dating and then marriage and would ruin his career. Harry stops him to say he has a boyfriend. Evan is immediately horrified and makes a scrambled apology during which he doesn’t allow Harry to get a word in edgewise.
During the dance, the prom queen is announced to be Kayla. But she hands over her crown to Chelsea, for being such a good friend. Apparently, Markie gave her advice about how a show of giving away power is the best way to keep it.
Later, Harry finds Evan again. Evan apologises for earlier and Harry admits he found it cute. He does have a boyfriend but they’re open, hinting that he is actually into Evan. Evan gives in and kisses him before roughly pushing him away. He says they should pretend this never happened. Harry says he’s crazy and angrily walks away at the end of English Teacher Episode 3.
The Episode Review
English Teacher Episode 3 puts the tension between Harry and Evan in the spotlight. Or rather Evan’s suspicions about Harry’s feelings and his own anxieties about dating. The overthinking, anxious wreck that Evan is, makes him a very relatable character and _ does a great job making him endearing. That ending though, Harry went from calling Evan cute to calling him crazy pretty quickly. So it will be interesting to see how this unfolds.
Sitcom romances are generally built up slowly so it is a bit surprising how quickly this one has gotten into it. On the other hand, the student shenanigans continue to be amusing. The writing is witty and pokes fun at the new generation and their wokeness without really insulting them. Markie’s dissection of the power play between Kayla and Chelsea is hilarious and arguably more entertaining than Evan’s obsession with Harry.
