Emily in Paris – Season 4 Episode 9 “Roman Holiday” Recap & Review

“Roman Holiday”

Episode 9 of Emily in Paris Season 4 starts with Emily going on her regular run as she texts Marcello who is in Rome.

She runs into Genevieve outside her apartment complex and learns that Gabriel had told her about the flat that Camille had moved out of. Emily goes home to tell Mindy all about this when Mindy shows her an article about her and Benoît from their photoshoot.

The article discusses if Mindy and Benoît were having an affair despite her relationship with Nicholas. Mindy worries that Nicholas would not appreciate the news piece, despite it being untrue. She asks Emily to go to Rome to see Marcello but she refuses. Mindy suggests that Emily should take a few days off work to meet Marcello, who was very persistently inviting her to Rome.

At the same time, Gabriel helps Genevieve move into her new apartment. She invites him to a house warming party that evening. On her way to work, Emily overhears the conversation between Genevieve and Gabriel wherein the latter agrees to come over for the party.

At Agence Grateau Emily runs into Camille who was in a meeting with Sylvie. Sylvie tells Emily that alongside the other champagne brands for Camille’s family, they were going to help market her family vineyard – Le Domaine de Lalisse. Emily and Camille chat and the latter reveals that she was going to adopt a baby and moved out to live in a better house that could accommodate a nursery for the baby.

Emily is shocked and congratulates Camille for deciding to move on. She makes the decision to apply for a holiday so she could meet Marcello. Emily lies to Sylvie when the latter asks to meet Marcello for a business collaboration. She states that she is going to Kraków and not Rome and leaves to meet Marcello.

In Rome, Marcello shows Emily around and the two spend quality time together. Emily is enamoured by the beauty of Rome and tries to take in the beauty of every Roman monument she sees. Marcello flirts with Emily and takes her to his friend – Gianni’s restaurant. Gianni shares some secrets about Marcello’s childhood and offers Italian delicacies for Emily to enjoy.

Marcello asks Emily if she prefers Rome over Paris and the latter claims that it was hard for her to pick one. Emily learns that Marcello and his sisters live with his family. He asks Emily to come over at home and meet his family. Emily agrees and thanks Marcello for the wonderful tour. She mentions how despite spending the day in Rome, she did not take a single photo.

Just then, Emily runs into Bianca, the co-owner of Bavazza Coffee. The two chat for a bit and Bianca takes a photo with Emily and Marcello. Marcello invites Emily to attend a party with his friends that evening.

In Paris, Nicholas’ older brother brings up the article about Mindy and Benoît and states that he is not capable to take over their family business when he has such a messed up personal life. At Agence Grateau, Genevieve tells the team that Emily is in Rome with Marcello. Julien mentions that JVMA is trying to acquire Marcello’s brand which makes Sylvie desperate to sign Marcello.

Sylvie gets upset with Emily for lying to her. She calls Emily and asks her to get Marcello to meet her. Emily tries to explain that she is on a holiday and wants time for herself but Sylvie asks Emily to prioritise her work. Emily refuses which pisses the latter off.

At dinner, Nicholas tells Mindy how her professional life was affecting him. He asks Mindy to stop pursuing Eurovision and it hurts Mindy. She tells Nicholas that she wants to put herself first and breaks up with him. Mindy leaves the restaurant in tears. At the same time, Emily attends Marcello’s party while Gabriel attends Genevieve’s house warming party.

While, Gabriel meets Genevieve’s friends at the house party, Emily has a gala time at the luxurious party with Marcello and his friends. Genevieve ends up kissing Gabriel while Emily kisses Marcello. On their way back after the party, Marcello hails a cab for Emily and reminds her about their trip to his hometown the following day. That night, Emily gets a bottle of champagne in her room as a gift from Sylvie.

The morning after, Sylvie shows up outside Emily’s hotel and talks to Marcello about Agence Grateau marketing his family brand. Marcello is upset with Emily and leaves without hearing her out. The episode ends with Sylvie asking Emily to talk to Marcello to sign with Agence Grateau.

The Episode Review

While most of the episode was a thrill ride, it is really childish of Sylvie to expect Emily to use her personal relationships for the benefit of her company. Showing up in Rome unannounced instead of explaining the situation to Emily first is a bad move on Sylvie’s part.

Genevieve really is a conniving mean girl and we can see how desperate she is to live the life that Emily has. From throwing herself at Gabriel to ratting Emily out at work and trying to take over her position, I am worried that this season will end with Sylvie firing Emily and Genevieve replacing her at work.

I love that Camille apologised for causing Emily to break up with Gabriel, she cannot change the fact that she caused the two to split due to her selfish motives.

Mindy breaking up with Nicholas seems to be the right move for her. However, Mindy seems to be forgetting that Nicholas chose her over his father and stood by her when she was having a hard time after what happened at JVMA.
