D.P. – Season 2 Episode 5 “An Jun-ho” Recap & Review

An Jun-ho

Episode 5 of D.P. Season 2 starts with Seo Eun talking to Ru-ri about representing him in the court case. She reveals that she has started a practice of her own and wanted to help Ru-ri. Ru-ri believes that he didn’t need a lawyer and that he is willing to pay the price for killing and injuring the soldiers.

Eun convinces Ru-ri to allow her to represent him in court. The episode then moves to Jun-ho listening to Hye-yeon’s interview on the TV where she talks about the treatment of soldiers in the military. He is taken back to Woo-suk’s funeral and he recalls that Hye-yeon had asked him what he had done to help her brother when he was bullied in the military.

Present-day Jun-ho asks to see the files on the flash drive and sees that the device had a lot of confidential information about the military. The file had some unlocked documents that mentioned details of Ru-ri’s attack and the fact that a soldier was still alive after being shot.

Jun-ho reads the report of his death which mentioned that he lost his life because he wasn’t taken to the hospital in time. Jun-ho realises that the information on the flash drive could ruin the military leaders and cause unrest in the world due to public revolt.

Ja-woon makes a public announcement about the status of Ru-ri’s victims in front of reporters and the family of the victims. Eun asks about a rescue operation and Ja-woon lies, stating that all the deceased victims died on the spot. Hye-yeon tries to further question Ja-woon but he refrains from answering her questions until he sees the final report.

Eun talks to Hye-yeon and asks her to be wary of Ja-woon and other powerful men involved in the case. The women discuss what it was like putting their hands in the lion’s den and decide to work together when possible.

At the same time, Jun-ho gives Hye-yeon a call to inform her that Hyeong-beom had died because he was not rushed to the hospital in time. He asks Hye-yeon to meet her. Meanwhile, Beom-gu asks Gi-yeong to look into Jun-ho’s whereabouts as he had still not returned with the flash drive.

Despite completing his enlistment term, Ho-yeol takes back his discharge and pleads with Beom-gu to be sent on his last mission to find deserter – Jun-ho. Together Beom-gu and Ho-yeol pay a visit to Jun-ho’s house and talk to his mother. She gives the soldiers a note written by Jun-ho where he tells his mother that he will be back home soon.

Meanwhile, Jun-ho’s father leaks information about his son and tells Min-u that Jun-ho has a flash drive with him that contained classified information. Ja-woon asks the cops to follow Jun-ho and track him down to find the flash drive. Ho-yeol and Beom-gu try to think like Jun-ho, wondering what he was up to when Jun-ho calls Ho-yeol.

Jun-ho talks to his seniors and claims that it was his responsibility to right the wrongs made by the system and promises to come back once he was done. The D.P. team continue to try and track Jun-ho down when Gi-yeong informs them that Jun-ho is on a train.

Ja-woon forces Gi-yeong to reveal Jun-ho’s location and asks Min-u to take a team of soldiers to stop Jun-ho. The group of soldiers are sent to capture Jun-ho, dead or alive. Jun-ho boards the train to meet Hye-yeon but is being followed by two soldiers. Min-u sends more than 30 soldiers, asking them to board the train and stop Jun-ho.

Meanwhile, Ho-yeol and Beom-gu are stuck in traffic and are not able to reach Jun-ho in due time. On the train, Jun-ho recalls what had happened to Woo-suk because of his carelessness. The soldiers try to catch Jun-ho on their own to gain the merit of capturing a deserter but Jun-ho manages to knock them both out.

One of the two soldiers warns Jun-ho about the sheer number of soldiers that were chasing after him. The mob of soldiers follow Jun-ho as he boards a rather empty train but Jun-ho single-handedly fights them off. Jun-ho manages to disarm all the soldiers when Min-u shows up out of the blue and attacks him.

Just as Min-u tries to arrest Jun-ho, Ho-yeol shows up and stops the warrant officer from chasing after Jun-ho. Jun-ho escapes and Min-u is about to attack Ho-yeol for ruining his plan. He warns Beom-gu and asks him to be prepared answerable about his actions. Jun-ho manages to escape the train but Sung-woo finds him there.

The duo get into a physical altercation but Sung-woo knocks Jun-ho out in one blow and destroys the flash drive. Hye-yeon waits for Jun-ho to show up at her brother’s tombstone but Jun-ho does not answer the call. There, she finds the lighter that Woo-suk used to burn his apartment with a note from Jun-ho apologising.

The Episode Review

There are so many questions with this episode and the first of them is why make Sung-woo the bad guy? As much as I loved him playing the psychopath killer against Jung Hae-in in Disney+’s Connect, Goo Kyung-pyo’s character on this show, Sung-woo, is not all that bad. From the looks of it, he was just an incompetent soldier.

I think the makers are cashing in on the opportunity to have Jung Hae-in and Goo Kyung-pyo clash because they look so good against each other. This episode made me very happy because no matter what the situation, Ho-yeol will show up for Jun-ho and vice versa. I am sure the entire altercation in this episode is part of the bigger scheme of things.

Jun-ho probably went home on purpose and so did Beom-gu and Ho-yeol, looking for him. It is possible that the trio were aware that Jun-ho’s father would leak Jun-ho’s whereabouts to Min-u for petty cash. There are some characters that really do not deserve a second chance and Jun-ho’s father is one such character.
