Episode 6
Episode 6 of Don’t Come Home begins with 1992 Natee dragging Varee back to the basement and she surreptitiously grabs a stone. In 2024, Officer Aof tells Inspector Fah that the gun from the 1992 case is indeed registered in 2006 and belongs to Colonel Yutthachai, Varee’s husband.
What happens in 1992?
A young Natee is a gentle and kind man who hates violence. Panida scolds him for it and orders him to kill Varee if she tries to cause problems. As for Panida, she gets closer to Min, doting on her and doing her best to ensure the little girl is not scared of the thunder or the flickering lights. She is over the moon when Min finally shares that she is happy with Panida.
In the basement, Varee and Natee argue over her situation. He reveals that he never planned to kill her and simply wanted to take her to the cops as he believes she wanted to rob Panida with the gun.
As for Varee, she tries to explain that she is from the future and simply wants Min back as she is her daughter. While Natee is troubled by the fact that Panida might have stolen Varee’s daughter, he doesn’t believe her identity. And that is because, Panida’s biological daughter, the real Varee died in 1991 with her father. He shows her the real Varee’s photo and she is confused as it doesn’t look anything like her and 2024 Varee believes she is Panida’s only daughter.
However, Varee couldn’t care less about Panida’s past and starts screaming for Min. A troubled Natee reinforces the basement door and guards it from outside. Panida finds him and scolds him for not being able to handle a lunatic. He asks her about Min’s real mother and Panida insists that the girl is hers. She tucks Min in bed and throws the real Varee’s Alice in Wonderland book at the bottom of the closet.
Downstairs, Varee recalls the rock and breaks the glass cage. Natee tries to stop her but she stabs him in the eye and realises he is Natee. She takes the gun and rushes to Min’s room. She cries but before the little girl can spot her, Panida drags her away.
On the landing, the women struggle as Varee tells her about time travelling but Panida refuses to believe her. Getting nowhere, Varee begs her to give back Min. This provokes Panida, who vehemently claims Min is her daughter and pushes Varee.
Varee hits her head on the chandelier and falls to the ground floor. The broken chandelier bursts and falls on her face, burning her upper body. Panida rushes to Min and claims she will not lose her again.
Does Fah figure out the disappearance of Varee and Min?
Fah visits her father, Major Vichai Arayakij, the one in charge of the 1992 case. He is a drunkard and abusive. She asks about the 1992 case and he shares that Natee is indebted to Panida because she bailed him out of jail for illegal logging and gave him a job.
As for the dead woman, she is a lunatic who tried to shoot the family with Yutthachai’s gun, and Panida killed her out of self-defence. The only other thing the woman had was a paper with numbers in her pocket. As Fah heads back to the station, she recalls Varee telling her that she has a gun.
Fah and Tae look at the investigation board but fail to notice that Varee in 1992 looks like Min while the 1991 Varee looks different. Fah suddenly recalls Min’s paper doll and realises it has been disfigured to look like the dead woman. Fah frantically looks for the paper in the dead woman’s pocket and is in shock as she realises that the mother-daughter duo has time-travelled to 1992.
She rushes to the house and reconstructs the 1992 incident accurately. We finally see how she figured it out – the chit in the dead woman’s pocket is Fah’s phone number. She had given it to Varee who was wearing the same outfit as the dead woman – the yellow jacket and white dress.
Meanwhile, Yuttachai wants an update and follows Fah to the house. She lashes out at him, hitting him and blaming him for everything. She then goes on a rant on how the cops simply pretend to protect women but in reality, all they just want is to rule with the power they have.
Sometime later, we see that Fah has delivered her child and blocked Danai, suggesting he is the father. Tae helps her move out and confirms one last suspicion she has. The DNA results are back and the dead woman from 1992, Min and 2024 Varee are the same person.
Are Varee and Min the same person?
Yes, Varee and Min are the same person and are stuck in a time loop with Varee giving birth to herself. The best way to explain this is that Varee is in a time loop paradox for her to do so. Should she break out of the time loop, she would stop to exist.
In 1992, Min loses her memories from the trauma and Panida changes her name to Varee. Not wanting to lose a child again, Panida breaks the time machine and moves out with Min. 2024 Varee’s ghost watches tearfully. She is stuck in the house and her face is burnt – she is the ghost Min kept seeing in 2024 when they first moved in.
Min and Panida live a good life. When Min grows up and resembles Varee, Panida realises that the woman from 1992 was telling the truth.
Varee becomes a journalist and falls for Yuttachai following which they get married. An old Panida starts having manic episodes and begs Varee never to go home in hopes of breaking the time loop; so that 1992 Panida never kills her.
After Panida’s death, Yuttachai gets violent with Varee. However, there are times when he is loving and that’s how Min is born, confirming that he is the father. After a particularly brutal incident, Varee decides to leave.
She tells Min to hide and packs up as she wants a divorce. He doesn’t let her go and she shoots at him. It barely misses Min who is hiding in the closet. Scared, Varee runs away with Min. At the end of Don’t Come Home Episode 6, Min asks Varee where they are going and she says her family home – the beginning scene of Episode 1.
The Episode Review
Don’t Come Home Episode 6 gives us a Dark-worthy headache as we try to make head and tail of the time loop. We do pity Fah, if it took us a while to connect the dots with our omniscient view of the story, imagine what the poor cop must have gone through with not enough pieces to complete the puzzle.
Oh, and why don’t 21st-century Panida and Natee try to warn Varee? They know she dies because of 1992 Panida, and if they care for her, shouldn’t they try and tell her the whole truth even if she doesn’t believe in time-travelling? But oh well, there wouldn’t be any plot or time loop if that did happen.
All in all, this Thai Netflix show is definitely a fun, if not a little depressing watch that will scratch your brain just right. Don’t try to pick apart the logic like Varee giving birth to herself, and this may be one of the best time-travelling shows of this year. The technical execution is also a bonus as the sombre aesthetic and creepy house keeps the suspense going, and keeps viewers hooked right to the end.
