Episode 7
Episode 7 of Dong Jae: The Good or the Bastard continues the race for promotion between Dong-jae and Byung-gun. Byung-gun discovers Kang’s car near a port and assumes the drug maker is planning to flee by sea. Meanwhile, Dong-jae pursues a different lead and eventually locates the drug maker, who also happens to be the bowling alley owner, and arrests him.
Dong-jae couldn’t be happier as he prepares his interview answers for the upcoming ceremony, where he’ll receive the Model Prosecutor of the Year award. Here, we learn that Dong-jae had consulted a medical professional and discovered that drug makers often suffer from a pulmonary disease due to their exposure to toxic fumes, requiring them to visit the hospital for mandatory treatments. By tracking nearby hospitals, Dong-jae caught the drug maker en route to receive his shot.
The truth about Yoo-ri’s death begins to unravel. The drug maker had expressed his desire to exit the drug business to Kang, the distributor. Believing the drug maker was conspiring with Yoo-ri—who had recently begun selling drugs—Kang shot her. He then waited to kill the drug maker with the same shotgun but was killed himself instead.
After his victory, Dong-jae attends a team dinner, basking in the praise and attention. Unfortunately for him, on the day of his award ceremony, Nam Wan-sung—who realized Dong-jae hadn’t genuinely helped him—appears on his lawyer’s YouTube channel, revealing Dong-jae’s history of corruption. Dong-jae doesn’t learn of the revelation until he’s publicly expelled from the ceremony in front of his wife. Mi-ran, meanwhile, is reprimanded by the chief prosecutor, who reallocates Dong-jae’s cases and credits to Byung-gun and others. Dong-jae faces suspension pending a disciplinary hearing. Mi-ran visits Wan-sung to sever ties, but he refuses to cooperate.
Meanwhile, prosecutor Ji-hee visits a construction site, where workers mistake her for a reporter and inform Wan-sung. Elsewhere, Dong-jae issues a notice to Gyeo-re for his involvement in drug distribution. Ji-hee and Dong-jae team up, and she briefs him on the construction site case.
The site had been violating regulations, and a worker who reported it subsequently went missing. They suspect his body is hidden at the site, and they must find it before construction is completed. Wan-sung, troubled by the notice, is introduced to Dong-jae’s former superior, now a senior lawyer, to represent Gyeo-re, knowing it will make it difficult for Dong-jae to handle the case.
The Episode Review
As usual, the plot progresses in an engaging manner, with each piece falling into place. The spotlight remains on Dong-jae, whose attempts to start anew consistently fall apart in ironic fashion. The show not only boasts a strong plot but also offers deep, complex characters that align perfectly with its tone.
Dong-jae exemplifies a well-crafted redemption arc. Despite his repeated efforts to turn his life around, his dark past relentlessly haunts him. The show handles his setbacks with a uniquely Dong-jae-esque, silly sense of humour.
With a full-scale personal battle now underway between Wan-sung and Dong-jae, we’re in for even more entertainment and dark comedy!
