Despicable Me 4 (2024) Plot Summary
Despicable Me 4 is back a whopping 7 years later after the 3rd instalment. The animated comedy sees the return of Gru and his growing family as they are forced to get into a witness protection program after crossing paths with the wrong villain. In Despicable Me 4, Gru gets his old classmate and nemesis, Maxime Le Mal arrested. However, the villain escapes and is hellbent on kidnapping Gru’s son.
AVL shifts Gru’s family to Mayflower where they have difficulties adopting their new identities and fitting in. To make it worse, the neighbour’s kid, Poppy recognises Gru and blackmails him into helping her in a heist. As for the minions, AVL enlists them into their Super Serum program in hopes of turning them into superheroes. Well, here’s the ending explained for Despicable Me 4.
What happens to the Mega minions?
The Mega minions’ first mission to save some locals from crime and danger is a mess and they are sent into retirement. But when Gru Jr. is kidnapped by Maxime, AVL alerts the Mega minions who bring along their newfound friends like bees, cheese and cattle to the fight.
After Gru Jr. breaks out from the trance that Maxime has put him in, the villain falls down the tower. Maxime believes he is unscathed only to be trampled by the Mega minions and their friends which allows the AVL to catch him.
At the end of Despicable Me 4, when Gru and Maxime have a showdown in prison to see who the better singer is, all the minions arrive to support Gru. And among them are the Mega minions who help the rest break into the prison.
We also see what happens to Ralph the minion who is stuck in the vending machine. He is left behind in Mayflower as he is busy sleeping when everyone moves out. He finally wakes up, and after much force, he is able to break out of the vending machine. However, the vending machine falls and presses the full lockdown mode button. The Mayflower safehouse shutters all exits and goes underground. But in the credits, it seems that Ralph escapes and returns to AVL only to use the Super Serum and turn into a unicorn.
Does Gru form a truce with Maxime?
At the beginning of the film, we are told that Maxime is not only angry with Gru for getting him arrested during their reunion but also for stealing his act during their talent show in school. Maxime’s girlfriend, Valentina believes that it may be a coincidence. However, that is not the case. Once Maxime is arrested again and put in a high-security prison, Gru visits him. There, he gloats that he did indeed steal Maxime’s song for the talent show.
But it was payback since Maxime had pantsed Gru during their homecoming dance. Neither is ready to apologise and instead, they start bickering about who the better singer is. In the end, they decide to have a song battle in prison where they sing ‘Everybody Wants to Rule the World’. Initially, they fight for the mic and try to upstage the other. But as everyone joins in, Gru and Maxime also get friendly and end up singing together.
What happens to the kids?
Gru Jr. is turned into a cockroach by Maxime but once Gru saves him, the family calls in Dr. Nefario. The mad scientist is able to turn Gru Jr. into a human once again. Margo is bullied at the Mayflower school but Poppy befriends her after she is impressed by Gru during their heist. But Margo doesn’t have to be the outcast for long as the family finally returns to their old town once Maxime is arrested.
Agnes is initially heartbroken when she has to part with Lucky the Goat for the Witness Protection Program. But once they return home, Gru brings Lucky back much to Agnes’ delight. As for Edith, she doesn’t get into trouble for breaking the pinky toe of the Karate instructor.
Does Poppy become a villain?
Poppy, the neighbour’s kid wants to be a villain and enlists Gru’s help for a heist involving his alma mater, Lycee Pas Bon. She plans to steal the school mascot, Lenny the honey badger so it looks good on her transcript. With the help of Gru, Gru Jr. and the minions, she pulls it off. In the end, we see that she has successfully enrolled at Lycee Pas Bon which is a school for aspiring villains. And with that, we complete the ending explained for Despicable Me 4.
