Delhi Crime Season 2 Review – A gripping sequel with a badass main lead

The new season of Delhi Crime, though shorter than the first, is nowhere near as good. The focus of Season 1 was on a national issue, which put the entire country into a state of unrest back in 2012. The 2019 season of Delhi Crime did a great job capturing the emotions felt by the victim. Because they were still alive, viewers were able to empathize with her. 

The crime thriller’s second season narrates the lives of the Delhi police force years after they found the rapists of the last case. Everyone has moved on but the police force still has the same issues as the past, struggling to get a hold of a city plagued with increasing crimes. 

This season, the crimes are directed toward affluent senior citizens who live in a gated community and portray a flashy life full of glitz and glamour. The criminals here are the Kachcha Baniyan gang (a terminology to refer to their way of dressing in undergarments where Kachcha = short pants/underpants and Baniyan = tank top/undershirt). 

Since the nature of the crime includes butchering the faces of their victims by crushing them with hammers, the Delhi Police force, led by DCP Vartika Chaturvedi is in a fix. The MO (Modus Operandi) of the crimes are similar to that of the tribal community groups from years ago but the new age criminals are far too smart, not making any mistakes that are putting them on the cops’ radar. 

The second season of Delhi Crime, though short, was just as infuriating, keeping viewers on the edge of their seats as they root for the cops to find these murderers. The nature of the crimes explored in Season 2 are nowhere near as shocking as season 1’s rape case, but the fact that there are so many more victims in this one makes it a much bigger issue for the police force to find the criminals. 

While Season 1 highlighted the media play that goes about in the country, this season also attempts to show just how much the media badly impact an investigation led by the police force. Delhi Crime is backed up by impeccable actors who have worked exceptionally hard on their characters but Vartika Chaturvedi, played by Shefali Shah, takes the cake in this one. 

From becoming the fierce cop whose words empower the victims and their kin, to being a menacing person in authority who makes the criminals shiver in fear, you just fall in love with Vartika Chaturvedi – and Shefali is to credit for that. 

Domestic troubles would have been the least of our concerns for Inspector Neeti Singh played by Rasika Dugal but it is interesting to see how her personal life meddled into her work and her husband, who is also someone who has pledged to protect the country, is indifferent to her duties towards the nation. Rajesh Tailang (playing Inspector Bhupendra Singh) is a treat and it’s always fun to see his calm and composed self no matter what the situation may be. 

I wish Inspector Sudhir Kumar had more screen time in Season 2 because I loved every single scene he was in last season. While we really do not learn what goes on in the minds of criminals and why they do the things they do, Tillotama Shone plays the psycho Karishma who is so driven to live the life of the affluent that she did not have any regrets about killing them. 

She is a maniac and it shows after what she did in the final few episodes, despite which she was able to live a normal life without guilt. The season, just like the last, highlights how criminals do not always have a motive to do things. Sometimes, they do things for the hell of it. The season was pretty great on its own and gripping until the end but I personally was far more invested in Season 1. 

That could totally be based on how the media interpreted the first case when the real crime took place years ago and how it impacted India as a country. However, because the less sensational nature of the crime from Season 2 was not as intense as the first, it probably did not keep me gripped till the final minute. 

With all that being said, the show really is Shefali’s, and her team’s fierce determination to get the bad guys. Her character being a frontline worker with the goal of protecting citizens makes the viewers feel reassured that not all cops are bad and that the media portrayal of the Indian Police force is very biased. Overall though, this is an enjoyable follow-up and well worth a watch.
