Memorable
Death and Other Details Episode 7 begins with Rufus telling Imogene his side of the story. He takes on Kira’s murder case for Lawrence Collier’s money even though Danny warned him the case was too high profile. Imogene walks through the whole thing in Rufus’s shoes. The Colliers guide Rufus to young Imogene. He then interviews everyone else.
Everyone talks about how helpful Kira was, volunteering in her spare time. Lawrence says Kira accompanied him on all his trips. She didn’t date much and rejected Llewellyn when he asked her out.
Danny enters Rufus’s office and shows him Kira’s date book. Rufus realises a page is missing. He finds it had a note for Opal Diner on 12th February. One month before she died. Rufus and Danny go to the diner where a staff member named Edgar remembers Kira. She came in often but one time she had an argument with someone.
He mentions that Kira’s kid was at the diner that day. We then see the scene where Rufus shows young Imogene his notes written in code and teaches her about the primer needed to break it.
Fifteen years later, Rufus hears about Viktor Sams in another case. Llewellyn storms into his office and tells him to stop harassing Lawrence. Imogene, at present, realises that Rufus never stopped looking for Viktor Sams. She asks him why he made her believe he gave up the case. Back in 2005, the Colliers tell Rufus that he’s not doing a good job with Imogene as she’s still unable to sleep. They don’t care about her talents the way he does. But in this way, they make him leave.
At present, Imogene persuades Rufus to work with her now and help her remember what happened at the Opal Diner. We see young Imogene and Kira at the diner when Kira gets a call. She struggles to remember what happened at first. In the memory, the older Imogene follows the younger to the Collier house and through various rooms into a suitcase. Finally, they sit face to face across each other and young Imogene says she promised she wouldn’t tell anyone who she saw.
Suddenly they’re out in the rain and the older Imogene then sits in a car next to her mother. Playing out the scene before she died. The car blows up and the memory freezes. Rufus asks Imogene what she’s afraid of. She says she’s afraid that she saw Viktor Sams and blocked it out of her memory and allowed him to be free.
She then allows herself to remember what happened. Young Imogene saw her mother fighting with a woman who made her cry. The woman is none other than Governor Alexandra. Alexandra says Kira doesn’t have a case, despite five dead employees. Kira even claims to have a witness.
In the car, Imogene mentions seeing another woman with a mole. Kira panics and tells Imogene to forget she saw all of this, to bury it deep. That’s why Imogene blocked it out. She thinks it over and realises the woman with the mole is Celia Chun.
At present, as realisation hits, Imogene goes up to Celia and confronts her in front of everyone. She says her mother was a whistle-blower and Celia was the witness at the end of Death and Other Details Episode 7.
The Episode Review
Death and Other Details Episode 7 dives into Rufus’s side of the story and Imogene’s memory which turns out to be a vital piece in the puzzle. Unlike the other episodes, this one is only about Rufus and Imogene and leaves the other characters aside. As a result, it does feel like a lot less than usual is going on and feels slower than the other episodes.
That said, the episode really indulges itself in the show’s sense of style. The editing, the slow motion, the freezing of certain moments — it all works towards the show’s unique aesthetic. Imogene literally walking in Rufus’s shoes is a big part of this as well. It all works, giving the story a sleek and polished air. The story itself takes interesting turns but only towards the end. The reveal about Alexandra and Celia Chun is massive and will propel the show forward.
