Dead Friend Forever is a Thai horror thriller and BL drama about the events that follow a group of friends who take a trip to a secluded cabin to hold a farewell party for one of them who plans to go abroad for studies.
Jin is a photography student who intends to study overseas and settle permanently in the United States. Therefore, his high school friends throw him a farewell party at Por’s family cabin in the woods, where the 8 friends can enjoy some privacy and have the freedom to party, have sex, take drugs, and drink alcohol.
Among the group of friends is Phee, Jin’s high school crush, who rejects him after Jin’s confession and physical intimacy. Among the friends, include Fluke, White, Tee, Top, and Tan. The core friends who have known each other the longest are Tee, Por, Top, Jin, and Fluke, while Tan, Phee, and White are transfer students. White joins the social circle since he is dating Tee, while Tan and Phee have a hidden revenge agenda against the group.
Dead Friend Forever starts like any other horror drama, with mysterious deaths and chaotic events that beat logic. However, unlike most horror dramas postulating that the chaos happens due to some external force that only wants blood, Dead Friend Forever gives an immersive background, delving into themes of bullying, revenge, and retribution. The frenzy has a reason, and the narrative is heart-wrenching and emotional.
The guilt of their past actions haunts the friends, and secrets are revealed through drug-induced hallucinations. The script is well-paced, fueling the adrenaline rush and immersing the audience, unable to distinguish reality from supernatural visions. The ending is infuriating while leaving the viewers questioning their sanity.
The characters deliver outstanding performances that evoke many mixed emotions throughout the series. Initially, the audience would root for their survival, but as the tale of retribution continues to unfold, they wish nothing but death for all of them. The character’s versatility and exceptional delivery play a crucial role in the aggravation as each character plays a significant role in the narrative development.
Their performances are convincing in how they beg for their lives, show remorse, and convey mental fatigue, fear, and anguish. You will fall in love with their intensity, the unhinged emotional spirals, subtle waves of seduction, and sensuality in intimate scenes.
The characters have contrasting personalities that fit perfectly with the narrative. For instance, White is gentle, kind, friendly, enchanting, and sweet, while his boyfriend Tee has an aloof, still, and standoffish demeanour. Top is the comedian who never takes anything seriously, while Fluke is quiet but selfish. Jin is a lover who is passionate and jealous, but he easily conforms to his friend’s expectations.
Tan is vengeful and ruthless, which scares Phee, so he eventually bails out of their plan. Although Phee is angry and remorseful for his past mistakes, which make him manipulative, he is initially a romantic, compassionate, and protective lover.
Overall, Dead Friends Forever is a tale that delves deep into the theme of morality. After watching the series, the viewers are left with unending questions, wondering who deserves to live or die. Who is to blame for the misfortunes that Non suffered? Is the retribution the friends get in this horror series proportionate to their crimes? The ending is a cliffhanger, leaving wishing for a second season but wondering what to expect. Are the friends dead, or did they hallucinate their deaths? The plot twists, suspense, and substantial backstories make Dead Friend Forever compelling, leaving a lasting impression on the audience.
