Brella Boy
Chapter 156 of Dandadan begins where we left off in the previous chapter with Zuma visiting the area where his younger brother perished. Zuma glances at bullies picking on a kid while reminiscing about his experiences with his former family. Also, Zuma notices a broken toy on the ground and ignores it. Zuma sees one of the bullies throw the kid’s bag into a lake.
Before Zuma departs, he sees the kid staring at his gift from beyond the lake. The kid jumps into the water, much to Zuma’s surprise. Zuma drops his umbrella and recalls his younger brother’s demise. The police officer stops Zuma and tells him to call the fire department. The police officer jumps into the water to save the boy.
The police officer doesn’t want to let the boy drown. Zuma rushes to the scene, begging the police officer to come back. Then, Zuma notices a small boy nearby, who happens to be a spiritual entity. Although no name’s given, we’ll refer to this specimen as Brella Boy.
With Brella Boy’s items, Zuma rescues the police officer and the child from the water. Zuma brings the police officer and the child ashore. The police officer coughs up water and notices the child nearby. The police officer’s happy the child survived. The chapter closes with a shot of Brella Boy.
The Chapter Review
Chapter 156 of Dandadan continues exploring Zuma and the police officer’s backstory. In this chapter, Zuma helps the police officer rescue a bullied toddler from drowning, something our side character failed to do with his younger brother. This is a great act of redemption for Zuma and the police officer. Having both men save the child from their demise gives both gentlemen a sense of atonement since they both failed to protect their families.
At the same time, many may question Brella Boy’s origins. Many wonder if Zuma’s younger brother somehow merged with the Brella Boy spirit in the past. Simultaneously, many could argue the Brella Boy’s spirit took on Zuma’s younger brother’s image for undisclosed reasons too. Hopefully, a future chapter will delve further into this debacle as this “young brother” fiasco will leave some confused and others intrigued.
Narrative questions aside, the chapter delivers great artistry. From Brella Boy’s design to the shot of a young Zuma getting covered in his mother’s blood, Tatsu doesn’t hold back on making their audience feel a specific emotion from their work’s visuals.
Overall, this was another interesting chapter of Dandadan. Although this backstory is certainly interesting, we hope Tatsu will return to the present timeline’s events soon.
