Delta
Episode 4 of Cruel Intentions begins with Lucien over ain Annie’s room, watching her sleep. After going home with her, there’s no clear indication that the pair did have sex, and later on we find out that they didn’t. However, for now news spreads like wildfire across campus, and Cece reveals all of this to Caroline.
When Annie does wake up, she receives a letter inviting her to Delta Phi’s big event that night, Heaven. However, she’s torn up over Lucien leaving so early and contemplates whether to message him or not.
Meanwhile, Caroline marches in to see Lucien, who’s busy playing mah-jong with the older ladies. Lucien believes Annie is boring and tedious and needs a break from it all, but Caroline is quick to remind him that he better not be self-sabotaging and going back on their bet. When Caroline leaves after badmouthing her step brother, the other women agree that she’s a “see you next Tuesday”.
Annie shows up to see Beatrice and she wants to talk. Beatrice is not happy and points out how humiliated she is about the whole endeavour, including Annie not immediately following her outside, and shuts the door in her face.
Annie is also being ghosted by Lucien, and when he doesn’t reply, Caroline shows at her dorm and pushes her to show up at the mixer.
There’s also drama over with Cece and her professor, Chadwick. It turns out he used to be married to a rather eccentric woman who has a book out called “F*ck Your Trauma”. Lucien is in attendance to this big speech she gives, where she pedals the idea of basically screwing your way through trauma.
Cece shows up late to the Sorority as a result of attending this, and she’s shunned by the group as they all start humming and doing their little Heaven shindig. It’s supposed to be a night of sisterhood and friendship, and unfortunately Cece is kicked out. Instead, she ends up at the bar where she runs into Chadwick. They discuss his marriage, before turning their attention to enlightenment and other topics, all the while getting closer together.
At the same time, there’s drama involving Scott and Blandsman at the Sorority too. Blaise is right in the midst of all of this and the drama involves Scott punching Blandsman in the face, and dicks being drawn up on posters. Riveting stuff.
At the Heaven event, Caroline brings up the bonus of sisterhood after talking about a harrowing story surrounding her past. Annie also admits that she’s a virgin and Caroline leans over and kisses her passionately.
After, Caroline brings up how her brother is damaged, and Annie is pretty bummed because Lucien just up and left in the middle of the night. Caroline sabotages her brother, and points out Annie should instead think carefully about who she loses her virginity to. After hearing this, she decides to warm toward Scott, while snubbing Lucien.
The Episode Review
What in the Wattpad fanfiction is this? So not only has every character been ruined, we now get Annie and Caroline kissing passionately? Really? I’m not sure who thought that was a good idea but the setting surrounding the college is also showing that it was a bad move.
If word has spread that fast that Annie and Lucien spent the night together, what of all the other women from other sorority houses? And the constant filming? Surely this is going to come back into the fold. Seeing Lucien sleep with the book author is another nod toward the film, although it’s a good example of how the story has been distorted for the worst. Here we get straightforward sex between the pair. In the film adaptation, we see Sebastian pretend to be all innocent while sleeping with the therapist’s daughter just for the fun of it. Small changes but massive character implications for both.
The editing is poor throughout and this episode only reinforces this, with redundant scenes like the Alpha Gamma party and the drama with the male leadership completely pointless. It all feels like busywork to “flesh out” a world that doesn’t need fleshing out.
We’re getting into love triangle territory now with Caroline involved with Annie and the latter getting close to Scott, and it’s clear that the writers really want to go in their own direction with this story. Unfortunately, they’re learning all the wrong lessons from their destruction of I Know What You Did Last Summer.
