A Bang, Not A Whimper
Episode 6 of Cross begins with Alex being coached by his Union Rep. He needs to hand over his gun and badge, and that also means staying away from the case. Which he won’t do, of course. Heading outside, he finds Malika there along with a bunch of protestors, angry at the police and still wanting to defund them.
Meanwhile, Chief Anderson has actually already looked around Ed’s house, and found nothing. We know he’s the real killer but Ed voluntarily opening up his house for them has dissuaded them from following this lead. Of course, Ed’s a master manipulator. It works too, and the heat is off and the police have their attention on other things. The only person who doesn’t give up on this is Alex. He has the whole station against him, including John.
John and Alex have a very heated argument inside the changing room, discussing the beating that’s got Alex in trouble originally. The pair look like they’re about to fight it out, until Shawna interjects and calms the whole thing down. The trouble is, the whole station have heard this.
Flowers arrive for Alex with a note reading “You’re still my number one” (from Ed of course) and the word “Abolish” on the side of his car (from the protestors). This only plays into his mindset, and things are worse when Damon gets into a fight and finds himself expelled for a week.
Back home, Kayla comes with good news. She’s narrowed down White Mike to a punk band in the 80’s. They had a lot of diehard fans… including Ed. The band actually pretended to do ritual sacrifices on stage, so it makes sense why he’d be so enthused by this.
Alex is determined to do this no matter what, but things are complicated by Damon’s attitude and need for his father. Nana Mama is quick to reinforce this and there’s no arguing with her either – Damon is coming with him no questions asked. For now, it’s time to head up to Philly.
On the way, Alex opens up to his son, explaining about the assault video. You see, the reason Damon got into a fight at school is because some kids were showing it to his sister, so he beat them down. Alone on the road, Alex explains that he was wrong for beating this guy, and the man he beat wasn’t bad, he was just torn up over Maria.
As for Kayla, she has been a busy bee. She’s frozen the LLC account, intending to get Ed out of hiding. However, Ed has no idea as he’s too busy working on Shannon and “fixing” her teeth.
Now, this account is actually linked to Trey, not Ed, and when he finds out he can’t withdraw money, he’s livid. He decides he needs to “go north”. Wait, isn’t this guy wanted from the police? How is he just wandering around outside?
Back on the road, Alex shows up to see White Mike and, more specifically, lead singer Michael Grisham. He invites Alex in and explains Ed was more into death and murder than the music he played. Apparently Ed dug up a knife and sent it to Mike. He sent it back quickly, as he used it to kill a guy called Rodney McKay. Given Mike’s jittery demeanour, Alex realizes that he was actually there when it took place. However, Michael is torn up over not going to the police sooner about all of this.
With this in hand, Michael Grisham is moved to a safehouse, while Anderson reluctantly moves back ahead with the case once more. How many false starts have we had with this case? Anyway, the Grand Jury are going to hold an emergency meeting in the morning to go after Ed thanks to the video evidence.
As for John, he heads in to see Kayla at the bar, and encourages her to join him when they go in to bust Ed.
Meanwhile, Regina does some digging when she finds out about the case. She heads over to see ex-cop Roger Thorn, wanting to know who Deidre Nolan’s accomplice is. She confessed to murder but apparently was working with someone else, explaining who may be stalking Alex.
Deirdre’s statement was buried though, but Nana Mama is determined and demands he reveal the name. When she heads home, Alex and Damon are back. They’ve connected much better and even share memories surrounding Maria too, listening to old voice messages.
Meanwhile, Kayla and John, fresh off a very eventful morning, show up to see Ed Ramsay. However, he’s pretty cocky and throws shade at their witness. And then we see why. Yep, it’s the crooked cop angle. It’s not Anderson though but actually Massey. She shoots White Mike dead.
The Episode Review
To go along with the cliches in this series, we also get the crooked cop angle, although to be fair it’s quite surprising to see this was Massey and not Chief Anderson as I initially theorized. It would appear, given she’s pregnant, that she’s being manipulated by Ed and forced to do his bidding to keep her child from harm. That much seems apparent from the ending, as she’s not exactly a cold-blooded killer, but it also throws shade on the entire case now too.
Speaking of cliches, we do also get the “best friends fall out but then end up together again stronger than before” angle which is playing out, and it seems obvious that John and Alex are going to get back on speaking terms again soon.
Now, even without their star witness, there’s still the video they can use, and of course all of this will now come down to finding Shannon before it’s too late.
