Ride the White Horsey
Episode 2 of Cross begins with Alex heading downstairs, gun drawn and rattled. However, it’s just his daughter Janelle wanting to get a drink. Alex is shocked as a glass shatters on the floor, and Nana Mama is certainly concerned about this. Cross is clearly still traumatized and haunted by the ghosts of the past. He does apologize to his daughter, but John is far less forgiving.
When he finds out, John brings up that Alex needs to get his act together, and reinforces the drama involving Emir and Tavio. Apparently, they haven’t found a phone on him, despite there very clearly being one at the crime scene when he was shot dead. This is their only decent lead and it’s not helped that there’s a big video going viral online.
Well, nobody bothered to check this video all this time because there’s a woman on camera who takes his phone and stashes it in her pocket. This is Vanessa and she has taken it because she wants to find someone to help get them justice. And she certainly doesn’t believe it’ll be the police. Her friend Mel hands over a gun to protect her, while simultaneously looking after Tavie, Vanessa’s son.
Meanwhile, “Josh” (who is actually Ed) shows up to see his match on the dating site, Shannon. She’s not happy about being catfished but agrees to do breakfast anyway. We do know that Bobbie Trey is working alongside Ed, and he warns about going after Alex Cross. However, Trey is given a job to get Tavio’s phone back and that’s what he intends to do.
We then see more scenes of Ed wooing Shannon, encouraging her to stop by his place the following morning after swinging his weight around and showing how much influence he has.
Unfortunately, things are complicated further when Janelle ends up stalked by a man out in the yard. Only, he stays hidden and seems to be communicating through the security system. Nana Mama turns all the cameras off as a result of the system being hacked, prompting John and Alex to head back home.
Alex notices the numbers on the ground for the Hop Skip Jump game have been changed too, to reflect the exact time and date of Maria’s death. For now though, Cross follows up on the Vanessa lead, and tries to find where she’s at. Well, Vanessa finds out that the cops are after her following a visit to Mel, and she’s warned to lay low.
However, Vanessa wants to get the tape to people she believes can get justice for Emir. This stems from a journo called Tania Hightower, who asks exactly where she is.
Alex and Kayla both find out where Vanessa is hiding out at, but they’re not the only ones. Bobby Trey breaks into her room and demands she input Tavio’s code on his phone to end this charade. When Vanessa refuses, Trey slaps her and forces the info out.
Bobby Trey gets into the phone eventually, and even takes Vanessa’s too, before stashing the SIM cards in his mouth and packing his stuff. He slits her throat and eventually skips out the back.
John and Alex show up too late, as she ends up bleeding out and passing before she can reveal who killed her. Unfortunately everything starts to unravel from here, but Cross is determined to try and figure this out. He knows that Tavio’s phone forwarded a message before it went dark and he wants to use Tania Hightower, the journo, to find out. In exchange, she gets exclusive access to the story. Although she doesn’t promise that it’ll stay off the streets in that time.
With Vanessa dead, Alex Cross shows up to see Tavie. Alex manages to get into the kid’s tablet and take the last voice message that Tavio sent. This includes an address listed as 41 Price Street. And this is the same place that Ed is hiding out at.
Naturally, Shannon shows up the next day for breakfast, the allure of money and fame just too good to turn down. Unfortunately, Ed drugs her, using the hand sanitizer at the entrance to spike her. As Shannon passes out, he calls her Aileen.
The Episode Review
So this generic crime thriller continues on, and this time we get more context around Ed’s diabolical plan. It would appear that he’s a serial killer that’s trying to kill people by making them look like others, and his operation extends out to this big plot involving Emir and the activists. Quite how everything slots together is a mystery right now, which is just as well because there’s not much in the way of mysterious allure with this one. However, it’s immediately clear that this case is anything but simple.
The cat and mouse game continues, and we’re still no closer to answers. All roads lead to this 41 Price Street though. Can the police show up in time to save Shannon from a horrific fate? Well, we’ll have to wait and see!
