Cherry Magic (2023) is the latest Thai BL drama to grace our screens. It starts off as a hilarious workplace romance with a smidge of modern-day fantasy. Achi is a simple man who keeps his head down at work and sticks to himself. However, on his 30th birthday, he realises that he can read the minds of whoever he touches all because he is a virgin. Of course, that is how he finds out that the hottest guy at the office, Karan has a crush on him.

Cherry Magic has been on everyone’s radar ever since GMMTV’s 2023 lineup announcement as it is a remake of the hit J-drama Cherry Magic (30-sai made Dotei Da to Mahotsukai ni Nareru rashii). It is also the comeback of Tay Tawan and New Thitipoom as a couple after their last drama Dark Blue Kiss in 2019.

Man, where do we even start with this BL? It reminds us of those extremely adorable GMMTV BLs circa 2019-2020. But Cherry Magic is just so much better from the acting which has just the right amount of over-the-top without getting cringe comedy to a wholesome plot. It is just so sweet and filled with green flags; tens across the board, we say. Really, we don’t have anything to say than it is so cute you will combust.

We wouldn’t have even been mad if they had only focused on Karan and Achi but we also get some loveable secondary characters and subplots for them. Jinta and Min take some time to grow but once they do, they are pretty cute as well. Then there is Pai and Rock who have their own little drama but it is extremely entertaining.

But Cherry Magic is completely TayNew’s from the acting to the storyline. But we don’t get those annoying hair-pulling frustrating plot devices to keep their story going. It gives us a straightforward romance where they genuinely love each other and are confident about their feelings without getting boring for the viewers.

What possibly makes it so hilarious is Karan who is this suave and talented guy who can do no wrong. He is the popular guy, the one who can get all the girls and is usually the cocky type. But thanks to Achi’s mind reading, turns out Karan is just as delulu as us, he has no cool, he is just a boy in love who gets all giggly when his crush acknowledges him.

Meanwhile, Achi has no rizz, he just coasts by and believes he can do no better. But via his romance with Karan, the show also addresses themes of inferiority complex, self-love and believing in oneself. Again, the show doesn’t need to, it works perfectly fine as a simple rom-com about a guy who can read minds.

But it is these little things, like the characters being supportive of each other and helping them through their mini, unrelated conflicts that elevate Cherry Magic. If you are looking for a super wholesome show with no toxicity, supportive friendships, cute people doing cute things and also giving some really solid life advice, or even if you are looking for a silly rom-com to just pass the time, this one has it all.
