“Three Reasons Not to Fall in Love”

Episode 4 of Chastity High starts with Ichico’s mother, Chihiro, showing up in school for class observations. She is proud to see Ichico confidently deliver a presentation in class along with her classmates. Chihiro asks to meet Ichico’s teacher to talk about the alleged scholarship she had received.

Ichico panics that her lie will be exposed but Ryougo saves her by stating that the teacher was not in school that day. On her way out, Chihiro meets Mrs Maki and the two women chat as they run into Atsushi’s mother – Mrs Kanda. Chihiro is shocked to see her there and the two greet each other as they leave.

Ryougo tells Ichico that they were doing this Love Keeper thing wrong. He claims that they should tell the students that they are on their side and want to help them from being suspended. This works in their favour and the students feel more secure about paying the Love Keepers instead of having their secrets exposed.

Ichico is doing great as she pays off her mother’s debt while Asuka suspects that Ryougo is dating someone as he seems happier than usual. Ichico gifts her mother lipstick and Chihiro points out how she looked good with Ryougo. She hopes for her daughter to experience love one day. Meanwhile, Sawa and the other student council members get aggressive with the students who are suspected couples.

Ichico asks Sawa if she was being so aggressive due to personal reasons but the latter claims that Ikushima asked her to be strict. The council get together to plan for the upcoming school trip.

On the other hand, the news about Love Keeper spreads like wildfire. Ichico overhears bad gossip about Love Keeper and talks to Ryougo about doing something to stop it. She then gets a message from a couple who claim to be from religious families. The couple states that they do not have the money to pay Love Keeper but want their picture deleted.

Ryougo suggests that they help this couple for free but Ichico does not see it as ideal for their business. Meanwhile, during his regular counselling session with Yuki, Asuka talks to her about the idea of falling in love. Yuki gives him some advice that makes him see that he is falling in love with his teacher. On the other hand, Haruto continues to have sex with Ayami in secret.

The school trustees meet Ikushima and warn her about the repeated suspensions. They claim that this was bad for their business but Ikushima argues that she needed to stick to the rules as the female students paid a lot more fees than the male students and adds that the school needs to protect the girls.

The trustees state that Ikushima would be held responsible if she continues to dismiss students in this way. Meanwhile, Ryougo ends up catching Haruto hooking up with Ayami in the upstairs library and is shocked. He tries to confront his brother that night but the fight between the brothers ends with Mr Maki calling Ryougo a disappointment. He goes back to their Love Keeper hideout and meets Ichico there.

Ryougo opens up to Ichico and tells her how his father has been abusive to his mother. He also adds that he had been written out of the Maki family’s wealth. Ryougo tells Ichico that he is trying to make money to help take his other overseas with him. Ichiko is touched and invites Ryougo home with her. Ichico shares the story of her mother’s dream of wanting her to graduate from the elite school.

The two start bonding and Ichico tells her that she is willing to help the couple for free. In private, Ichico wonders if she is falling in love with Ryougo. The students go on a school trip and Atsushi ends up being paired with Ichico. At the same time, Mrs Kanda meets Chihiro at her workplace and apologises for hooking up with her husband.

Mrs Kanda states that her son is Ichico’s classmate and adds that she is worried for her. She tells Chihiro that her son, Atsushi had issues with boundaries and has been upset with her ever since her cheating was exposed. At the trip, Atsushi talks to Ichico but realises that she does not remember meeting him when they were younger.

Sawa gets obsessive about catching couples engaging in romance. She tries to control Yuma but Ruka stands up for him. That evening, Haruto brings Yuki over for dinner. At the same time, the students sneak out of their rooms to watch the fireworks. Ichico watches Ruka and Yuma go out on a walk as the other students play with the fireworks.

Ryougo talks to Ichico and Atsushi watches them from afar. In their room, the girls decide to share their feelings with Ryouko and Ayami. They state that the person who gets a response from the boys can pursue either of them. Ichico agrees to play the game and sends a message to Ryougo expecting a response from him.

At the same time, Mrs Maki talks to Ryougo over the phone and informs him about the dinner with Yuki. He gets upset and texts Ayami, asking her to meet him. The girls are shocked when they see that Ayami has a text from Ryougo as the episode ends with Ichico feeling embarrassed and heartbroken.

The Episode Review

Now that we know how Atsushi and Ichico are connected, we can see why he is obsessed with her. Since Mrs Kanda was the mistress of Ichico’s father, it was right for Chihiro to expose her in front of her family. But why take Ichico with her and expose her to the Kanda family? This decision could potentially ruin Ichoco’s life and her mother would be the one to blame for it.

We can see that Ryougo texted Ayami to inform her about the dinner but this will add an unnecessary love triangle to the mix. The misunderstanding trope is not a good look for the show and I wish there to be a shocking plot twist soon. The show is a fluffy and light romantic watch. I wish there were more thrilling scenes and depth to the story given the production scale of a platform like Netflix.
