Netflix’s love for true crime documentaries is at an all-time high as fans of the genre get more and more obsessed with real-life criminal cases. With a plethora of mini-series and movies based on real-life criminal cases, the streaming giant is nowhere close to being done with this genre. Catching Killers is Netflix’s 2021 show that narrates the story of how law enforcers were able to catch serial killers or dangerous criminals, no matter how difficult the chase was at the time.

Season 3 of Catching Killers comes more than a year after the second season aired. Following a similar 4-episode format, the show tells stories through police and eyewitness accounts surrounding chasing most wanted criminals. Unlike its former seasons, Catching Killers season 3 extends its reach to focus on not three but four killers.

The first episode tells the story of detectives finding a serial killer who hopped on and off trains, managing to escape his arrest. The Railroad Killer was notorious for hunting down unsuspecting victims, killing them and feasting on the food they left in their houses.

The second episode switches things up to the hunt for a copycat killer who followed the MO of a popular serial killer from the ’60s. The New York Zodiac Killer, a man responsible for shooting 12 innocent people. Meanwhile, episode 3 looks at the crimes of a three-time bomber that killed two and injured hundreds of people.

The final episode follows the chase of the D.C. Snipers, the two men aged 19 and 41 responsible for the death of 10 innocents. The episode details how the two were caught after a 23-day-long reign of terror.

The entire season focuses on one case per episode but continues a similar style of narration. Decades after the crimes were committed, these now-retired detectives reflect on how they tracked these dangerous criminals.

This new season does not have anything unique to offer though, and just like its previous seasons, sees the structure focus on law enforcement and detectives narrating how they solved tricky criminal cases. However, it does a good job of spicing things up by using news reports, case records, as well as eyewitness accounts of the crimes. The episodes also shed light on the extent to which these detectives go in order to arrest dangerous criminals.

One thing to note is that, just like Season 2, this season also only includes male criminals, unlike the first season which included the story of a female serial killer’s arrest. While this is clear the ratio of male to female killers is pretty high, it would have been interesting if the show could include female serial killers as well.

Catching Killers is a decent watch for avid fans of true crime who have enjoyed previous seasons of the show. While there isn’t masses of detail surrounding each individual case, due to its “one episode per criminal” format, there is a lot more that could be explored about the crimes if each criminal got their original documentary.
